I have a strong feeling these are a gimmick: advertised are a group of about 25 or so roman coins that looks fresh from being dug up out of the ground http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NICE-Lot-of-U...ns_W0QQitemZ140141440641QQihZ004QQcategoryZ122471QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
and the idea is you clean them by electrolysis and hey presto! you have some recognisable (but barely) roman coins..
Anyone tried this?

I have cleaned a few hundred ancient coins but not by electrolysis. Using olive oil and/or distilled water and some tools such as pins and scalpels you can obtain a fine or even a VF coin if you are careful and patient. You will get a percentage of slugs as well. It can be a lot of fun and relaxing as well. The "crusties" are the most challenging to clean (they look like crusty pebbles, not coins) but sometimes result in a nice find. I highly recommend Tom & Tony at http://commonbronze.net as a good place to get started. Electrolysis is the fast lane in ancient coin cleaning - it is easy to remove all the patina and make the coin worthless. Nevertheless, some swear by it.

I have bought several thousand uncleaned roman coins over the years and have used several methods to clean them including electrolysis. I've had excellent results having uncovered many coins in the fine to xf range after cleaning. Some of my cleaned ancients can be seen on my omnicoin site at http://www.omnicoin.com/?collection=echizento

There are sellers that sell these that are a bit more reputable than nobody that you know on ebay, try vcoins.com for a listing of over 100 dealers, many of them have lots of uncleaned coins, and there are also many of them on VAuctions.com. You will not be guaranteed that all of the coins are going to be satisfactory, but you will get some that are decent, and mostly identifiable on Wildwinds.com

I have yet to buy one of these lots, but my 12 yr old son is interested in this as we did an identity on a coin that someone sent him a couple of years ago, and I have thought of buying a lot of 10-20 coins to experiment with.
