Hi all, Is the quality of RCM capsule packing quality getting worse. What I mean by this is, recently, all the coins I've been receiving have had residue on the coins before being sealed in their capsules. It's really annoying as it deters from the appeal of the coin. For example, I just received an order for the privy replica of SML and in the middle of the coin there's 2 hairlines of black which looks like the felt-like material from the clam shell. I want to exchange this but it's awaiting stock so I might just return it... Anyone else experiencing this or is it just me?

I haven't that sort of issue. I fact unlike most people I've never had a single issue with the RCM.

It seems from what is reported here, is that the RCM has coin encapsulating and capsule packaging of a lesser standard than The Royal Mint or the Royal Australian Mint. Modern proof coins at least need to be encapsulated in a very clean environment, preferably by mechanical means. I have noticed a few reports here in the CCF, of milk spots on RCM coin products. It seems that the RCM could do better. There should be NO foreign body that finds it way into the capsule. Acrylic capsules are electrostatic. I have found dust particles on the OUTside of RAM capsules, most probably the result of MY handling of them.

@sel_69l: My experience is that finding small dust particles inside of coin capsules is not unique to the RCM. I have personal experience finding the same sorts of things inside the capsules of coins purchased directly from The Royal Mint and the Royal Australian Mint. Also, I believe the "milk spot" references you have seen refer generally to the RCM's bullion coins, not its proof NCLT coins.

Thanks for correcting me somewhat, especially re RCM non proof bullion coins. MY experience as regards encapsulation of Royal Mint and RAM for proof coins is all good; it seems that perhaps that is not always the case, and a tiny bit surprising to me. How for others on non RCM proof products?

I buy from RCM, Perth Mint, RAM and Royal Mint UK from time to time. And I have to say RCM has the worst dust issue. Royal Mint UK is not good either, but instead of dust what I usually found is black lint possibly came from the clam shell. Perth Mint and RAM actually are doing a good job in keeping the coin free from dust. But I found from the recent Perth Mint releases that their capsules no longer close tightly, in the sense that no matter how hard I press the capsules together, there is still a small gap between the top and bottom part. This is happening to both of their Proof coins (like 2013 Colour Snake proof) and bullions (like 2014 1oz Koala).

I haven't had any residue issues. But on numerous times the capsule was not fully closed. Never too serious, but definitely easy to fully close.
Don't know if that implies manual or mechanical packaging.

Sorry to bring this topic up, but is it advisable to try opening the capsules to brush the lint off? What would be the best way of doing so?

Prevalent: It is okay to open your capsules to clean your coins but one thing to remember is not to touch the coins with your bare fingers.
I've had to clean a few of my coins recently and I used a soft eye lens cloth. I also cleaned the capsules themselves before putting it back together. My method of doing it is by taking a tiny flat head screwdriver and gently wedging it in-between the top and bottom capsule pieces. Make sure you don't wedge it too hard as it make leave a scratch on the capsule, just apply a little bit of pressure and it will open.
Also make sure that when you're done you have the reverse of the coin facing the top piece of the capsule and the obverse of the coin facing the bottom piece, I learned the hard way and my coin wouldn't fit back into my clamshell.

Thanks for the tip! I don't plan on taking the coin out at all, I just want to brush off a piece of lint that's pretty much 1cm long because it's destroying the appeal of the coin. My only concern was that I've been doing some online reading and some sources suggested the capsules are glued together, so I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to ply them apart.

If your coin is from the RCM then you should have no problem as most of their coins come in air tight capsules that can be opened and closed multiple times. I'm not sure if they used glue before on their capsules but if they did they have stopped using it. Good luck!

I notice felt on the outside at times but the coins I purchase from the RCM directly are always spot on. I have issues with buying from dealers and second hand coins more often. I think the RCM capsules are by far the best. I've been trying to buy capsules from them for years and I always get the same answer they don't sell capsules but will send me one for a replacement. Anyone happen to know where they order theirs from because they won't divulge that information ether.

So finally got to checking the coins out and turns out what I thought was a hairline for one coin is a scratch and the other has dark tarnish marks on the bottom that I can't rub off... Well this was disappointing, thought it was just felt from the case.
