Im looking to buy a graded steel penny in an ngc holder and just learned that there are a few companies that replate these coins. I cant find any info, but do the grading companies designate that these have been replated or can I assume that they are original.

A grading company will reject a coin that has been plated post-mint so if it is in TPG plastic, you can be assured that it is an original steel cent.

Thank you. I kept reading that its very common to replate them and that they are very shiney when they do. I see some of these ms67 and very shiney almost cartwheel like and didnt think they came like from the mint. Thought they were more dull looking.

Yeah, they almost look "watery" for lack of a better word.

Yes, original MS steelies certainly are shiney. They dull down when circulated.

If you want some that are plated with something, usually you can find them in coin shows, coin stores, hobby stores, etc. It is not just one or two companies that plate them. Many kids in labs in school plate them for fun. Some plate them for resale as new. Some plate them for novelties.
And if they have a real great mirror appearance, might be Chrome plated. The ones plated with Copper are my favorites. I'm up to well over 2,000 1943 Cents. Only 3 are Copper plated. About one roll of Chomed ones. Most that are plated have a plating of Zinc but many are alos Tinned. Difficult to tell which are plated with Zinc and which are Tinned.
At Flea markets I usually find plated ones for about $0.10 to $0.25 each. Non plated ones go for anywhere from $0.25 to several dollars pending the grade. I've only seen the Copper plated ones at coin shows and they were selling for about $3 each. So far I've never seen one that is Silver or Gold plated.
