It is common in some coins I see. Oil on the skin interacting with the metal.

Nope not oil I can rub it all I want and it won't come off. Looking close to it, it seems to be engraved kinda like if someone put their finger in cement.

What I mean it seems like someone touched it while it was still hot and the metal molded to the fingerprint.

Possibly whoever touched the coin works in an environment with acids and s/he doesn't wash. Initially I didn't believe this was etched, but seeing that it's not on a plated coin gives that theory more support. If purposely etched, why didn't the maker fill the entire coin and the obverse? It just stops midway, or is it just poor lighting on the image? If done by accident the person wouldn't touch the entire surface of the coin, just the side.

Human skin contains oils. The oils are acidic. Sometimes when you touch a coin the oils get transferred to the coin and then "etches" into the metal. Most of the time the print can not be removed without damaging the coin.Spend it. John1

If you contact those CSI people you see on TV, maybe they could track down the fingerprint! Then you could ask the guy or gal if they would like their Loonie back? And category? Post Mint Damage, I'm afraid.

Quote: Just wondering what category this would go into. How about ebay? Maybe you can sell it to a CSI enthusiast? You can try listing it as if it is a particularly good specimen from a fingerprint perspective: clear ridge structure and minutiae, recognizable delta formation, sufficient detail for individualization, capable of being searched in AFIS,.... Maybe add something like: people often say "If only this coin could talk" or "I wonder where this coin has been" - well, with this coin, you don't have to wonder - you can know.
