I ran across a 1963-D quarter that appears to have a re-punched D mint mark and the two Ds appear to have been stamped atop an S mint mark. I don't know. That's what it looks like though. If anyone can determine from my photos what is here I would be grateful. This is an odd and addicting past time. I started looking through coins about two months ago and have found all manner of coin varieties and errors, including: - a 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent- a 1952-S Quarter with a die crack on verso - a second 1963-D Quarter with re-punched mint mark D/D - an 1867 three-cent nickel with a die clash (faint, front and back) - a 1917-S Half Dollar with mint mark on verso - a 1934 Quarter with a doubled motto - a 1942 Nickel no mint mark, type 1, non-silver - 2007-P Lincoln Cent with light doubling to most of the lettering on the reverse - a 1920 Nickel with doubling of LIB in Liberty - a 1988-P Dime with die clash on the verso - a 1921-D Morgan dollar covered with die cracks - a second 1921-D Morgan dollar with different die cracks all over - an 1878 Morgan dollar with doubling to Liberty and some stars on the obverse - a series of 6 unc 1964 Quarters showing the beginning and formation of a die crack along the base of Washington's bust (moving right to left) I even found a 1944 Henning nickel. This is seriously habit-forming. What is the problem with the image uploader? Did it ever work? My files are under 100k, there are no special characters or spaces in the filenames, and the png extension is accepted, but I keep getting error messages! This is ridiculous. I guess the forum doesn't care for png images. Let's try it again. Edited by ellisx 03/04/2014 1:05 pm

Must be .gif or .jpg, png images bigger than icons tend to be very poor for internet use due to size.

Thanks Bobby131313. I thought the png was okay. Changed my photos to jpgs and everything seems fine.

So, does anyone know about this coin or am I barking up a tree that's only got one branch or something? Are circulated coins not something to comment upon or is there no one here that knows? Is it the way I posted my query or showed my enthusiasm or do I have to pay something or do new people get ignored for a while before being even marginally accepted?

Welcome, this site is a very friendly site, no one here ignores people. Sometimes all you need is some.patience as it is Friday and people mag be busy. From the pics you submitted I cannot see the double D but maybe an S in the middle of the D but very hard to see from the pics. No money is needed to post here just maintain proper rules as posted.

I can tell you a poor attitude off the bat will not yield very good results. That being said, it does look like a d/d/s but I'm no expert.

Thanks JamesD for your reply. I tried to upload better images but they kept ending up too large for this forum. I don't think I have the same kind of camera that others on this site or those who routinely photograph coins have. I'd like to know what those cameras are. I thought I saw a reference to a microscope camera somewhere. That would be interesting. Sounds like it could be expensive. James: On the quarter coin, the doubled D is plainly obvious while the S is not quite so. Is this the kind of coin that does turn up from time to time? I've found way more error coins than I listed in my original post, probably about a hundred I guess. From missing letters, die cracks, stamp-through coins, doubled lettering (probably all Machine Doubling), bad planchets, extra blobs of metal, filled-in numbers and mint marks to weak strikes, puffy lettering, off-center strikes, rotated dies, some coins I think are DDO and DDR, a few die clashes, a 1917-S half dollar with mint mark on the verso, very worn examples of 1916-S and D dimes and 1917-S and D dimes, and, along with the Henning nickel mentioned above, I found a 1943-P War Nickel that looks like a non-silver nickel, just like a 1942-D non-silver War Nickel I found. Anyway, thanks James.

Thanks newhobby for your reply.
I can tell you a good attitude off the bat did not yield very good results, hence, my second litter of questions to which you replied, twice for some reason I see.
I'm going to look over my questions.
So, does anyone know about this coin or am I barking up a tree that's only got one branch or something? I've been in several forums over the years for cameras, cars and guitars, watercolors and such and more than once a forum was not what it seemed, i.e., not as many members as stated; one person posting as five, weird vibe, funny things like that, hence the one branch comment.
Are circulated coins not something to comment upon or is there no one here that knows? I don't know the answer to these two questions and the latter faintly refers to my first question.
Is it the way I posted my query or showed my enthusiasm or do I have to pay something or do new people get ignored for a while before being even marginally accepted?
Is there any kind of attitude displayed in my original query other than one of curiosity and enthusiasm of which I'm not aware? Was it in bad form to list the coins I've found in the past two months? If so, I shan't do it again. I don't know, which begs those questions.
Also, some of the forums had large percentages of folks who were elitist in their attitudes - better than me and you (to hear them tell it), especially the photographer, camera, and, b&w film forums. Photogs are a very strange bunch. I know!
Asking about fees is another honest question.
I posted my original question at 1pm on 4 March, more than eleven and-a-half days ago. It took a little bit because I had trouble uploading photos, but I got help from Bobby131313 and everything went smoothly.
And nothing since. And generally I'm patient.
Tell me newhobby - if you posted a question and did not get a reply for 11 and a half days, would any of the questions that occurred to me occur to you? Would you wonder if you had found an elitist crowd? Or a crowd that didn't know, or worse, one that didn't care?
I think I have pretty good attitude and I'm sorry newhobby that you think otherwise. It wasn't my intent, but if I offended anyone I'm sorry. I'm not particularly passive aggressive and I don't really have any qualms about saying what I'm thinking. I once wrote a long letter to the editor-in-chief at AOL.com voicing a few specific concerns and offering to send thesauruses (or is the plural thesaurusi?) and AOL did not use a certain word I mentioned for more than two-and-a-half months following that letter. They rarely use it today.
newhobby - Would you be offended if I posted my reply to you twice? - emphasis? Heheheh

I use my cell phone right now for photos, I built an adaptor that fits on my microscope works pretty good, look at some of my posts. My photos are to large also so I crop mine and then use the photo editor on this site just to shrink them to size so they fit. I am building a new photo system using an old copy stand. There is another good forum on here for coin photography, a lot of good people and setups on there.

I was unaware that my reply posted twice. I am on two forums so if no one here answers I will comment on my post to bump it back up because sometimes they get lost or people are busy. If that gets no replies I post to the other forum.

I can not see the MM clearly enough to make a determination.

They made regular non silver nickels in 1942 Both the P and D's along with the 35% silver ones. There is a possibility for a 1943 non silver but you would have to test the coin for it's metal/alloy content. I do not believe the weight would help as they are both just about the same but maybe must a simple drop test or tissue test would do.

Highly unlikely since there would be no reason to have an S mintmark around in the working area of the die shop. The San Francisco Mint had been closed down since 1956 and wasn't reopened until 1965. And no S mintmarks were used until three years after that.

Thanks Conder, for your reply. That makes sense. But, hey, what about the S beneath the two Ds on the quarter? (only kidding). Thanks.
