It's in a clear plastic sealed case from the Mint...is it worth breaking out for the Dansco? Or better left in the case? I don't know much about these. wudaya think? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Not sure what is causing the haze, for lack of a better term on the obverse.

The mint mark looks like a "D" from your photos. If it was a Proof 40% Eisenhower dollar it would have an S mint mark. I think someone has replaced the 40% silver coin that should be in that package with a clad Ike. -MV

It's actually an S mint mark. The plastic case doesn't seem to have been tampered with either. Bpoc1 I'm not sure what that haze is either, but I know this thing would look nicer than the one I have in my Dansco.

I see an S mint mark. I think the angle and lighting makes it look squashed. Break him out and put him in your Dansco. That is what I did. As for the hazing, it is common for these. Conder101 explains why here... Quote: Why do so many of the brown ikes show this film? I think it is because they are so common that they were hard to sell and back in the 1970's a great many of these coins traveled from show to show to show in the unairconditioned trucks of dealers cars (no minivans back then and most dealers just drove sedans and carried their coins in the trunk.) So those brown Ikes got baked time after time at 140 degree temperatures traveling from show to show. The high heat cause the plastic to break down and outgas with the fumes condensing on the coins. For the record, all of mine look like this.

Crack it. I put mine in the Dansco, and have 4 more on standby for the next set.

So I couldn't resist, I cracked it out and glad I did it..the haze seems to have mostly been on the case rather than the coin. Funny story about this one, I got this for a birthday a few years back. I was born in 72. I put it in a box and forgot about it. I wasn't until I was reading the "Post your IKEs here" thread that I remembered I had this. MeadowciewCollector I took a close up of the mint mark just for you

Wow! What a difference. Interesting to note why this happened. Quote: As for the hazing, it is common for these. Conder101 explains why here...

I've never noticed much extra value being in a case. I'm busting it out of jail.

I've never come across the majority of the haze being in the plastic. All of the ones I've busted out look the same as they did when in the OGP.

It's a beauty. I can definitely tell it is an S mint mark now Glad you shared this, as I learned something I didn't know. -MV

I've cracked 5 of these out for my 2 Dansco sets. I don't think there has ever been a premium placed on the packaging, nor should there be.

I have a stack of them still in the OGP, one of which is graded in the case. It got wicked toning and I figured graded in the case no one would bleet about it being purposeful toning. Regardless, I am an OGP kinda guy. I like some of my stuff to be in OGP. Others are freed and go into Danscos.
