I bought the pictured Indian cent over the weekend and when studying it more closely I began to wonder about the nature of it's color. Somehow it seems a bit odd to me.

What thoughts might you have about the coloring of this coin, and perhaps could you share pictures of Indian cents that you consider "unusual but original," re-toned, or questionable?

Thanks so much,

Ed

Looks to have obvious signs of cleaning at one point in time.

Here is my 1885 Indian Head. PCGS sent it back unslabbed as questionable color (this was back in the days before they slabbed 'problem coins'). I don't necessarily agree with them, but that's the way it goes!

The big dark spot looks like a thumb print with the wavy lines in it.

I don't see anything wrong with the toning on your IHC.
To me it's quite natural for a reasonably stored copper coin.

But there is one problem ... I think.
Looks like it has a fingerprint on it.
IMO you should give it a good soak in acetone to remove the organic acids and oils.
That will stop any further problems caused by the coin being mishandled.
Whether the fingerprint can be removed is a different story.
You might consider contacting NCS and see what they say about removing it.

Shermae, your coins not been cleaned and the color looks natural

Thundercoin, could be that the sporadic spots appeared on your coin due to a forced chemical interaction and that was the assessment of the TPG...that btw, is pure IMHO speculation but they are out of place in an odd way

Thanks for the responses so far. The peachy color makes me a bit uneasy. Not sure why the 1885 is "questionable" but then again I'm trying to learn. Would love to see other examples with commentary.

I see nothing about the coin which strikes me as odd, as long as the color presented is true. The fingerprint - which is far larger than it appears - accelerated the change from Red to Brown. With that in mind, you can see just how large the fingerprint really is.

Put your thumb over a Cent. You'll see what I mean.

Neither coin looks cleaned or odd in color to me.

shermae, yours clearly had a fingerprint where the oils and acids remained on the coin and caused it to turn to brown except in small protected areas. Very nice coin none the less. At this point acetone would do nothing about it. That is an old long done print.

Thunder, I simply see carbon spots on an otherwise awesome UNC IHC.
