I just noticed this in a PCGS holder--has anyone seen this listed as a variety? It's not in my Snow book.

It's interesting. I haven't seen it listed as a variety. It seems whether a coin is a variety is kind of arbitrary. There are some IHCs varieties with die gouges, breaks and chips. It really seems to depend on collector demand and the popularity of a variety. You could send it to Rick Snow to see if he believes it is worth a Snow number.

It's certainly possible that it's one that Snow never encountered.
But for now I'm thinking it's a common die variety that has a die crack (late die state).
If so, Snow would not have included it.

Rick will rarely assign a new Snow number for die cracks. While it is possible that he will, I think there would have to be a number of known examples and there would have to be an increased level of collectibility for him to add it to the attribution guide.

I know that there is an 1864-L that has a die crack that runs vertically down the entire obverse that he assigned a Snow number to, but I believe that is the only one.

The 64-L is the only one that's listed (S-16) Snow said he made an exception for this one, but I don't think cracks should be routinely listed. Then again--I'm torn, because a big crack like this is far more interesting than dozens of insignificant RPDs.
