Just got two $10 bills from two separate ebay sellers in the mail today (paid $69.95 for the first one and $45 for the second one). Neither is terribly exotic, but I was missing these in my $10 "Type" collection: The last two notes I need to "complete" my type collection are the Series 1914 Federal Reserve Note (Red Seal) and the Series 1923 Legal Tender Note ("Pokerchip"). I'm hoping to pick up at least one of them at the big Bay State Coin Show next weekend. And yes, I realize my collection will never truly be complete (hence the quotation marks), but those are the last two I think I can reasonably afford. For now, at least...

Thanks for sharing these Barry. Curiosity is getting the best of me do you have a 1901 Bison? I've always liked that design. -MV

I clicked the link and am just in awe. The descriptions for the notes helped me recall some details I forgot. I took a look at your 7070 too Thanks again for sharing. -MV

Very nice collection barryg. Thanks for sharing. How long have you been collecting and what did you start with?

If you're talking about paper money in general, I started out with a very small collection of common items like $1 silver certificates from the 1950s and $5 "red seal" legal tender notes from the 1960s that I accumulated over many years. I only started trying to build a "type set" a couple of years ago, however, after finishing my 7070 coin type set.

I took a look at your link again. Wow! You have quite an amazing collection with your 7070 and banknote type set. I love how your "type" collections are focused and organized. My collecting interests go all over the place and have no rhyme or reason. Right now I'm interested in world banknotes but tomorrow that may change. You've inspired me to start a US currency type set with coins and banknotes.
Is your banknote type collection almost complete? What is your next goal?

Is it almost complete? Well, I guess it depends on your definition of the word "complete"...
I stared out with some limitations to make the process manageable. I decided early on to focus on just 20th century notes and to stick with $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20 denominations. I also decided to avoid the extremely rare notes that cost thousands of dollars.
Well, since then I have ended up collecting a small number of notes from the 1800s, and I've also picked up some $50 and $100 notes as well. There are still a few holes that I would like to fill, but they are all in the $1000 range in decent condition and I may have to pass on them for now.
My next goal is to start picking up a few slabbed investment-grade coins here and there. The problem is that when I go to coin shows I am torn between adding more paper or picking up a nice coin, because at this point they are both very expensive and I can't afford to get much of either.

Nice notes Barryg. I have to ask.. do you ever submit any of your notes to PCGS or PMG. I just became a member of PCGS this year and am sending in a voucher for 7 free grades tomorrow and didn't know what your take was on that. Anyways, thanks for sharing and good luck with the rest of the collection.

Nope. In order to afford a type set, I've had to buy a lot of lesser grade notes. I know they are not investment quality, so I don't bother having them graded. Besides, the graded notes don't fit into my currency album...
