Hello all, I have about 10 ancient roman coins. Some were in old flips and some were in old 2x2's (you know the small cardboard squares with, apparently, cellophane windows for the coins, they are stabled shut). The coins were put in flips and 2x2's in the 1970's. I have taken all the coins that were in flips and put them in Saflips (pvc free). Do I need to take the coins that are in the old 2x2's and put them in new 2x2's or saflips, or can I leave them in the old 2x2s? I am paranoid because of the stories I hard about old flips, but I was not sure if that applied to old 2x2's as well. Thanks!

I would say yes, those old staples tend to rust after a while and could effect the coin. Plus the cardboard they use weren't acid free.

Have fun w/your endeavor. I found this task emotional, as I had to change-out about 1200 world pieces when my dad passed.
He lived on the coast, & those staples looked as if they would snap, from just a stearn look.

As a general rule, you do not have to throw away old stapled 2x2s. However, you might want to anyway. Ancients can be hard to see through a stapled or self-adhesive 2x2 and you can't weigh and measure them. If I buy a coin in a 2x2, I usually don't bother replacing the holder until and unless I want to take a picture of it or otherwise examine it. In which case, I have no regrets in tearing it out and putting it in a flip.

Most 2x2s, even back in the 1970s, were not made from PVC. But here's a fairly quick test you can do. Pull apart one of them, and examine the plastic film where the coin was touching it. If there is a residue from the coin left behind on the plastic, then that plastic has been harming the coin - destroy it and anything that looks like it. Likewise, if the outside of the film has become sticky, it's best to destroy it - in this case, the film itself is fine, but the 2x2 has been stored in a PVC box, bag or album and the plasticizer has leached out of the PVC and into the 2x2 film.
