I'm expecting a shipment from USPS from VA to CA (coast to coast).

I tried tracking the package but apparently, since the package is certified, USPS cannot give me an arrival date.

I was told 3-5 business days is standard, but since it's certified it could take longer.

I want to make sure someone is here to sign for it, so I at least would like an idea as to when to expect it. It shipped out Yesterday, the 16th. Do any of you have an idea how long certified mail takes coast to coast?

I've never heard of certified taking longer than normal. I just received a certified shipped from Texas to Ohio that took only 2 business days. The package shipped Friday and I received it yesterday.

OK, so maybe the lady on the phone didn't know what she was talking about. Hopefully, because that would mean by Friday! :)

You can never say for sure how long a package will take. The closest to a sure thing is guaranteed overnight delivery which usually takes 24 hrs or less (but which has been known to take three days, in which case they will refund the fees.) Certified or first classusually takes 2 to 3 days but even two weeks is not too unusual. Registered can take three of four days but may take as long as a month.

Longer times are evn possible. Recent a package was delivered to a university in Michigan that was mailed over 37 years ago. The record for the longest delivery time is over 100 years. Lets hope you don't have to have someone waiting that long.
