Hi all,
This must be a common question but I didn't find it with a bit of searching.
I collected Lincoln Cents when I was a kid in the 1960s. Most of what I've got is a few dozen rolls of common dates in average condition. I'm tired of lugging them around when I move. :) The coin dealers near me all seem interested in gold and silver only. It would be silly to mail them to a distant dealer who would only offer a slight premium over face value - I expect the postage would exceed the premium.
I could of course just take them to the bank (if they'll even accept loose or rolled coins these days) and cash them in for face value. Or there's a coin machine at my grocery store, but it charges 10% or something like that - adding insult to injury! :)
It seems like there should be something more useful or interesting to do with them, however. They are not rare coins, and yet you will never find any of them in circulation. Kids don't collect coins these days as far as I can tell (my grown kids certainly never warmed up to the hobby) so I don't see a purpose in "seeding" change and so forth.
Any ideas, given that profit is not the big motive here? Something fun for individuals or groups? Edited by ashbury 03/10/2014 4:26 pm

Do you have grandchildren or grandnephews? Maybe a collector there.

Are these wheat cents or Lincoln memorials?

Check them before letting them go.

I neglected to state that they are wheat-ear cents. I'm talking about common date/MM 1917-1955, sorted, in normal circulated condition for their respective dates. Mainly partial rolls, nothing too extensive but too much to just toss.
I keep trying to complete these sentences... take the coins to the local school and... what? Take them to church and... what? Bring them to the local cub scout leader and... what?
Seems like there should be some fun for someone, and no coin dealer is going to want to bother with them because they're already cherry picked, but ... what?

If you didnt check them for errors already. I am sure either hoarders or people like me would buy them them you could make a big lot on ebay I am sure someone will buy them and pay the shipping to make it worth it.

Not sure what your local dealers are paying but one here pays 2 cents a piece. Dealers at coin shows usually sell them for 5 cents a piece in bags of 50 or 100 or more. ebay will take a 13% cut of the profits but if you have teens til 1955 you might get more money that the others seller 1940 / 1950's lots. There is always Craigslist and if have a good mix of early years I would search for key dates and sell the rest as a group for an average of 5 cents each if not more. Start high and repost or bargain down to what you want.

prior to doing anything you should look into purchasing a thing called the Red Book by Whitman Publishing. You should sit down with those and look through them for any possible rare or error coins. Some are worth a lot of money. Also, there are web sites dedicated to Lincoln Cents. For example one is the Lincoln Cent Resource and the other is coppercoins.com.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. I used to belong to a "Society of Lincoln Cent Collectors" but it seemed to go defunct a little while ago - I remember coppercoins.com as perhaps being loosely associated with it, but hadn't run across Lincoln Cent Resource before.

My local dealer pays 2.5 cents for bulk wheats. They are easy to sell on ebay and such to if you just want to get rid of them.
