Hi, I'm somewhat new to Morgan dollar grading and was wondering if somewhat could estimate the grade of my Morgan dollar I took pictures of and tell me why. I picked it up for an exceptional price - $400 - at a coin show and knew it would be a high grade. I'm hoping it's not Ms-64, because if it is, it'll be worth a lot less than I payed. That's what makes this a gamble and makes it fun. Edited by Zoran Spencer Allen 03/10/2014 8:30 pm

In reply to Canadian-Baknotes (haven't figured out this forum stuff yet), the original price was $800 but he said he'd be making a profit either way. I've weighed it already and asked my local coin dealer who says it looks legitimate. I'm confident it's real.

Though I am a bit concerned about the wear on the eagle's breast, the hair above her ear and the slight scratches spread throughout, I'm fairly pumped to see what grade it turns out to be. I'm thinking of sending it to PCGS but would love some public opinion.

I don't think it's a counterfeit. I was thinking it may have been body bagged, or came back graded lower then expected at a TPG and then cracked out, and sold raw. Then again, I've been wrong before. to the forum!

A lovely coin. Philadelphia strikes of 1879 are found with this strike weakness; I don't believe it's "wear." I'm confident that this one is a high-end 65 with a fair shot at 66.

The ware you're seeing is what I think is the result of a weaker strike, that might hold it back gradewise from what I've read but DONT hold me to that. But still georgous!

Better in the Grading Forum, I think.
Strike won't hold it back from 65 or even 66 - this one isn't that weak - but it would definitely be in play at 67.

Wicked nice Morgan, MS-65 for sure. Nice pics, Zoran - word of caution, though - if you can't grade the coin your self, $400 is a lot to gamble.

I can plenty grade a coin myself, I'm just not sure how accurate I am. Lol.

If it comes back from PCGS MS65 or 66 you win. MS64 would be a bust. However, I can't for the life of me come up with a positive reason why a dealer would not have this in TPG plastic if it is in fact MS65 or 66. I really hope for your sake it comes back from PCGS in a righteous slab if you take that route.
