I can't grade coins, but i'd say either a high AU or maybe BU. The reason I ask for someone else's opinion is because I feel I will look at higher prices and not evaluate the coin fairly for myself. Someone else's opinion would be more realistic in terms of a valuation. Thank-you :).

Just REALLY make sure you know they're not cleaned or ex jewelry of any sort or you've got issues mate, ya?
If so, and in solid AU I would say around four hundred American to 425 and you're doing okay If UNC I would add 75 to 125 more
Post pics if you're able prior to purchase and we'll help offer a more solid opinion

Thanks for the reply, that Is definitely something I'll need to check about any cleaning of a coin. What it is I've finally found somewhere, where I can get these coins and British full/half sovereigns at a good price all various years.
Now regarding telling a cleaned coin, I can tell some obvious cleaned coins. But my eye isn't trained for gold coins. I take it even BU coins of that age should have some natural toning, and if they look circulated but are too clean-that's a red flag. Are there any other tips you could possibly give me? Or leads on how too learn without making higher risk mistakes.
What I can do is set up a meeting sometime, If I can come out with a lucrative response I'll gladly share the wealth with collectors on here. Once I meet the rules and regulations to be able to do so on this site, that is. I'm excited about this prospect. :D

Check pcgs.com, on their 'home page' check the -photo grade- section. Is a list of all US coins, graded from lowest to highest, with pictures. The $5.00 half-eagle is tough to grade, (the $2.50 quarter eagle is even smaller!) due to the incuse design. The design is below the coins surface, rather than being raised. Were not really popular due to people back then being afraid germs would live in the sunken design of the coin. You will Enjoy the photgrade section!

All old gold even in AU and BU will have marks and nicks as gold us soft so from that grading perspective you'll be a bit looses.
It's about surface appearance regarding patina and/or luster. So if it's too "bright" and there's no cartwheel luster, it's cleaned. If it's got a nice, think copperIsh, patina/tone you know its legit. If it's got cartwheel luster with few breaks, and you just have to had handled a number of coins to train your eye, you know it's an uncleared BU.
You should buy an already graded piece if you don't have someone with coins in hand to help train your eye. It's a dangerous gamble, raw gold.
Good luck

I know I've said I'm not a fan of TPGs, but considering all the fakes out there of this coin (and their high quality), I wouldn't buy this coin raw unless it was from a reputable dealer who specialises in US coins.

Thanks for the advice guys,I feel this conversation was watched lol. They have all being sold, or the listing was ended :), or maybe the sellers on here 0-0. Oh well, I guess I'll have better luck in the jewellery quarter in my city. Thank-you once again guys.

A 1909 $5 is an interesting coin, but is valued by bullion price, especially raw. You should weigh the coin, and if it weighs less than 8 grams walk away. Either it's a fake or it has lost substantial value due to wear.
Current value for a dealer to buy is about $300 US. A dealer will add anywhere from $25-100 to that.
