A while back I posted this...

PCGS will not grade any ASE MS70 so it will be impossible to obtain a complete 20th Anniversary set graded 70 at PCGS.

Here is the PCGS statement...

Question: Why doesn't PCGS grade Silver American Eagles in MS-70?

Answer: The chemical rinse that the U.S. Mint uses on these coins can cause white spots to develop over time. In most cases, the spots cannot be removed. Until that problem is resolved, the responsible choice for PCGS is to stay away from the MS-70 grade, even though some technically perfect examples exist.

Now PCGS has changed it's policy on grading ASE MS70

Wonder if the change is due to the loss of revenue by more people sending ASE's to NGG for the MS70 grades?

I think that's why, they've lost business.

The more I have read about these grading companies the more disappointed I am in their practices. On the ebay board there was an letter from an dealer who spoke out on PCGS it was very interesting, I would post it but I think it was retracted or edited after some pressure from others. For the longest time I used to think how important is was to have slabbed coins from the "big 3", now I buy what looks good to me and improves my collection.

In my opinion these are the philosophies that signify a true collector; and with some disposable income, patience, and a little bit of luck this is how great collections are assembled and yield the best rewards when completed or sold.

I would believe grading companies if they showed on there websites a line up of ASE's graded MS65 to MS70 highlighting the areas on each coin that made them grade the ones from MS65-MS69 the way they did. Better yet, five sets (so you would see five different MS65's, MS66's, etc.). In other words, till there is a site that visibly, objectively defines exactly what differentiates these states I see no reason to place confidence in a grade of MS67 vs MS69 or any other high grade.

All of this is moot for me anyways because I only look for items graded MS63 (pretty nice uncirculated) or above, which just about all ASE's fall into. If one is slabbed at MS66-MS70, I use that just as indication it probably falls into my criteria range (still need to look at it though).

I am sure that since the release of their statement, more people really did send in more ASE's to NGC in hopes of the ms70. Has anyone seen a MS69/70 that one of these "spots" showed up much later? I am wondering if that really happens. There cant be very many.......
