Does that mean the roll was stored improperly and the rest of the roll might be infected too? I've also seen the same kind of roll with a nice light golden colored toned ends. What causes the difference?

Mainly he environment, air composition, temperature and debris such as that in a gun safe. Also the material that the role itself is made of.

Tarnish! Hard to say if the rest of the roll is toned, its just a guess I suppose.

Yes, I know it's tarnish, just wondering why one would tone black nasty, and the other was a beautiful golden color. Both are paper rolls, so it must be the environment like zxcccxz said.

As for the rest of the roll, open it to remove all doubt.

Not all roll paper is created equally, some types have a higher sulfur content than others.
