Here's an 8 reales (1783 Mo) I picked up some months back. It certainly has the look and feel of saltwater shipwreck salvage. displaying some erosion near and through the rim at the top of the obverse. My belief is that it's from the El Cazador, this being the most common date recovered from that vessel (for those of you not familiar with the El Cazador and its discovery, http://www.elcazador.com/ElCazador.pdf tells the story well enough). It's my understanding that early on these coins were sold directly by the salvor in possession, organized as the Grumpy Partnership, with simply some sort of certificate of authenticity, so a loose coin with lost paperwork doesn't seem too improbable. And there were plenty of coins to be be spread around. According to Marex Global Deep Sea Recovery, the quantity of 8 reales denomination coins alone that they brought up from theEl Cazador on behalf of the Grumpy Partnership was in excess of 400,000. Later on the Franklin Mint and NGC got involved in marketing these coins. Interestingly, when I contacted NGC, they stated to me that they hadn't kept a specific tally of just how many El Cazador coins they had certified as such.
