When I buy something on ebay, and pay via paypal, my purchase is automatically insured by eBay/paypal. As a buyer, I'm good. The thing is, if the item is lost in transit, and I make a claim, I get my money back at the expense of the seller (that's how ebay's insurance works - not really insurance).

My question is this - as a buyer, I have no need of paying more for insurance on top of postage because I'm covered. I can understand a seller wanting insurance to cover himself/herself, but why should I pay for it? My experience with postal services has been excellent - never had anything lost on its way to me.

Thoughts?

As a buyer, I've never had an insured package when buying from ebay except when it was free/complimentary. In addition, I've never had a package get lost before.

Well Mr god of the dead, interesting topic. I'm currently awaiting Royal Mail to get back to me about compensation of a lost parcel. My first ever ebay sale went missing :(. Royal Mail asked that I send them loads of documentation and my receipt for the postage. It's been 3 weeks and a bit and still no word, I'm thinking it's got lost aswell-ironically.

I wish there was an easier way to get compensated for loss of an item(s) at the hands of a postal service provider, but unfortunately not. I've also hand an amount of signed for items received that I never signed for, which worries me because dishonest people will take advantage of this.

So overall I find myself out of pocket and I've lost items :(, even though I used the correct postage method for terms of insurance. But I think what's happened to me doesn't happen often, and others get compensated even though it can take a month.

Sellers getting you to pay extra for insurance is a scam. Insurance protects the seller not the buyer. The seller is required by law to get the item to you, if they don't they are responsible regardless of what the auction copy says.

Oh I see I went on a rant and didn't answer your question lol, I agree with bobby. As a seller we are legally bound by a contract between us and the buyer, the contract is exactly what is on the page-Item description, price etc. Never pay a seller for a lost item, or if they try and add on extra charges to the sale agreed unless stated in the description. Sellers have insurance and compensating factors to cover us, and if we don't use correct postage giving insurance-more fool us.

If the cost of insurance is included in the stated shipping and handling costs or buried in the item price is essentially irrelevant to you as the buyer as all you (should) care about is the total cost. If a seller tries to tack it on afterwards without having detailed that in the listing then refuse to pay.
