hi all,

I recently purchased a lot of cheapie uncleaned roman coins, constantinian era stuff. most are in very poor shape. may be worth cleaning, but aren't going to be anything good. may be a good practice lot of anyone has been thinking about trying to clean coins or if you're just bored silly. if anyone is interested, and lives in the range of me that I can mail them to your for a single stamp, i'll send you a small group of 5 for free. so pretty much continental US only...sorry everyone else, but I'm to cheap to spend any more for postage. I've got three little bags of 5 ready to go. PM me with address if interested.

i want absolutely nothing in return. you can post something on the forum about your cleaning experience if you want to, that would be fine.

Make a competition for them :D, I know I can't win but i'd still participate lol. Maybe get participants to show a picture of one of their coins, and the winners are those who make the best story of their coin as if it spoke-so to speak. It would be really cool :). Just an idea for a bit of fun, and you're very nice to make this offer.

good ideas awallin, well, i'll just make a requirement (scouts honor) that you post something on the forum here instead of a suggestion that you do so.

Hey Chrsmat, I desperately need help on cleaning. I've got some good coins with great detail, but distilled water and toothbrush isn't working. Tried the tools, don't like the marks though. Going to try a brass brush or something else, like olive oil.

Or did you mean for me to not make suggestions and instead help people with their questions? If so point taken, sorry.

oh no awallin, I just thought you had a good idea. it would be nice if someone who gets the coins would post a little something here, that's all.

xodus, what tools did you use? I use a needle.

one has been claimed, two still left.

I use a pin, or a toothpick, or a dental pick, or a scalpel, or just a brush. One warning - the pin can snap. Nearly took out my eye. If you heat up the pin red hot it will soften when it cools.

It is possible to even remove tiny verdigris spots with a pin.
I just apply pressure to the top of the node, and quite often
voila! some of it will just pop off!
Verdigris being the damaging way it is, often leaves a grievous scar from where it was removed. That is why you can get away with such drastic measures as using a pin to remove the wretched stuff.

Chrsmat, I use a dental pick. But my dexterity kinda sucks due to taking a lot of anxiety medication lol. But I'm not giving up because of that, I'll get the hang of it.
