What do you think about this 1794 "Metal Coin" on the auction block right now on ebay? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1794-metal-...em417e0f8aed I attended Stacks Cardinal Collection auction in January 2013, met some of the key players in numismatics, and had the opportunity to hold and examine the famous 10 million dollar coin. I'm not a numismatic professional, but there's no doubt a genuine 1794 dollar like this could potentially sell well into the 6 figures. There is a lot of circumstancial evidence to suggest that this particular coin is probably a counterfeit, so I am staying away from it. If you look at the 4 in the date, it is not in a crosslet like other dollars which have sold on Heritage. In addition, the stars are exceptionally well struck. This seller is also selling some other possibly dubious early dollars. This kind of uncertainty makes me hesitant to bid on uncertified coins on the internet in general. Can anyone verify that this coin is a fake and why? Thanks

lol thanks, maybe I will purchase one of those chinese coins for the heck of it. To me it was a deceptive counterfeit, and obviously someone else thinks so as bidding has reached $350 so far.

It's a counterfeit.

Lots of the details are "off" (The Hair, the stars, the lettering).

The coin also has a very grainy appearance, which is very common on counterfeits.

Here is a genuine 1794 Dollar.

Too much to list; let's say it's a hilarious, pathetic attempt to anyone who's ever seen a real one before. Or stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

philadelphian beat me to the punch! I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I am qualified to impart a decision on said example.

(now please pass the Parmesan...)

I'm not on ebay; somebody has reported this, right? And all the other fakes this seller has actively listed?
Oops! It's already gone! I always recommend what coins4fun did: copy the pics from the listing to the thread, as they won't stay on ebay for long!
