Hi all, I went through some of my IHC and notices I have 2 1864 coins. This also was interesting to me because there are apparently two types, different metals that is.

What is the best way to tell them apart, I would assume a scale, which I do not have.

Any other info on these would be great. Thanks!

The Copper one will be a darker color normally, and the thickness of 65-09 and wheatback pennies.
The Cupro one will have a more yellow tone to it(in most cases) and be much thicker than the average Indian Head penny.

Okay, the thickness of them definitely was the detail that caught my eye. When I was comparing them to the Flying Eagle cents, they definitely were thicker of the other IHC. Thanks for the quick reply!

Next you have to worry about the "L" in the ribbon in the copper 64`s. L for Longacre the designers initial

I looked closely and couldn't see the L, I know it's right by that ribbon. It's not a terribly worn coin either. But it seemed thinner than my other 59-64 copper-nickel IHC.

On the 1864 no L, the end of the bust is rounded. On the 1864 L the bust is narrower and more pointed at the end. This attribution is used to separate the 2 varieties when the coin is too worn to see the L.

Beaglebailey,
So if my coin's bust doesn't look like your avatar's, then it'd have an L, and would be the bronze/copper type, not the Curponickel type?

I'm sorry but my eyes are not good enough to tell if my avatar has a pointed bust. The picture is too small. Both the CN and the bronze no L have a rounded bust. If your coin is not very worn you should be able to see the L if it is there. If you are still having trouble post a picture of your coin or compare your coin to other 1864 IHC on ebay.

I think I got it, looks like I had it in the wrong hole in my Whitman book. Thanks for educating me this afternoon everyone. It is always much appreciated!

Pointed bust = 64 Bronze L
Rounded = 64 Curpo & 64 No L

Thanks again!
