Does any one have any idea if the motto on the edge lettering is suppose to be readable from the obverse of the coin or the reverse, I just opened a roll of the Washington and 8 coins were upside down from the other 17 so I'm confused as to if there's a right or wrong way with the coin. Thanks Dave

It's a 50/50 chance. There is no order or system that makes them all one way.

Well thought I had something but turned out I didn't, Although last night I was buying some stamps from a machine and did get lucky enough to get a double lettered Adams dollar with the motto running upside down and right side up so that was a nice find anyway, Thanks for the reply.

With 4 presidents a year, I think we will be seeing more errors in the future.

I have to agree with Spider, there will be a lot of errors just not sure what the value will be on all of them.

I'm sure thinking of going back there seems to be a few different of the doubled edges in the Pensacola area, I heard of another guy finding 2.

Hmmm, hadnt thought of the post offices. I live in SE Michigan and the banks are pretty much cleaned out of the Adams dollars now. I did manage to find a few double edge and smoothies.

I went to one (post office) in SE Michigan and got 4 Adams, 5 Washington, 2-1979 SBA, 3-1980 SBA, and 8 Sacs. No doubling on the Adams though.

It's all hit or miss from which way they are stamped.

I find that a bit odd since the coins are actually designed to be a specific way, I read the proof coins in the presidential are all set to run one way, I wonder if some point in time if this will create a type 1 or type 2 version.

schaller56,
It is not odd at all- the circulation and proof coins have separate methods of applying the edge lettering. The business strikes are minted in a standard coin press for the obv and rev design. At this point, the edge lettering is not present. The coins are then run through an edging machine giving them the edge lettering. Because it is a secondary process, the coins are not fed into the machine in any particular order so the lettering can have two different orientations. The proof coin edge lettering is formed while the coin is being struck. The collar used to hold the blank between the dies creates the edge lettering, eliminating the need for a second step.
