Hay guys, Any idea on the grade of this one? I know the milk spots will impact the grade/value but I like them on this coin (but I guess that's just me) and I only paid a modest amount for this coin. There is also what appears to be green on the coin near the rim, but I have no idea what that is as it is not on the coin in hand, so I guess it has something to do with my camera. So whats the verdict? Thanks all Matt :) P.S If this is in the wrong place, then please move it and sorry about that. Edited by mcstone 03/20/2014 1:10 pm

Thanks for the reply, what tells you that this coin was cleaned? I'm just trying to learn.

Usually coins that show signs of rubbing or hairline scratches consistent with a cloth/brush are tell signs, if the coin is very clean yet shows wear. On the reverse Eagle side, there should be some more prominent stars appearing under where it says 'of the south'. Also the eagles left wing looks a bit faded, I believe on uncirculated ones it is a little more defined. Here is one to compare with just to see what I'm on about :) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stone-Mou...054897.l4275I will advise you to await some other replies as I'm learning, and no doubt they will have better input than me. And I'm in no position to grade, just admire :). Nice coin.

Cool thanks for the info awallin, there is no sign of rubbing or hair lines on the coin and a cartwheel of luster goes right through the area where the stars are, but the stars are very weak. The wing is weak too, so could it be a weak strike or does it defiantly look like wear? Any tips on how to tell the difference? sorry for all the questions, I am curious.

I suppose it could be a weak strike, but I just noticed on the right wing a line going down it from the f on 'of'. I'm really not in position to give this advice, these are just opinions. But the branch the eagle is on, the stars and the wing I feel should be more prominent and to me it feels like they were worn via cleaning away natural toning, The thing I'm thinking is, if it were a weak strike, why would these three ares be particularly affected as opposed to the other wing, small stars etc. Also that right wing looks like excess from a mold? or something like that.
Again I'd await the expertise of other members because they are far more knowledgeable than me. I'm just looking for error versions at the moment, to try and i.d. a similar right wing.

yeah, those are some good points. The side with the eagle is more hazy than the other side so I guess that could be evidence of dipping, the stars are more prominent in hand but the camera hasn't picked them up very well. as for the line on the wing, I think that is a die crack, but I cant find any other examples online either. I think that might be because commemorative coins are not really collected by die states and so they may not be well cataloged. What do you think?

I think your knowledge surpasses's mine lol. I can't find a right wing like that at the moment, which is interesting. I would definitely wait for someone who collects these coins or classic US coins to take a look. Hopefully they're will have knowledge of this. It might be an idea to get this in another forum and change the title, to try and find out more of about his variant on the right wing. Then go for a grade after. P.s. Do you have a scanner by chance? I use a scanner for my pictures, might show the coin in more detail helping with the grading :).

Thanks for all the info, you have helped me quite a bit :) I will wait for someone with more expertise to chip in and see what I can learn haha! I don't have a scanner unfortunately, perhaps I need one...
Thanks again friend, this seems like it could be a long one :)

No problem mate. No you don't need a scanner, many/most members use cameras :). You could try taking the pics under different lighting, and white paper helps for the background in a way I don't understand lol. Also I use picasa, to do my editing which can also bring out more definition in pictures that don't come out the way they should so to speak.
If you want to change the topic title you can do that with a button above your first post 'edit' and then click the 'send a note to staff' button and you can ask for it to be in a different forum more suited to identifying this type/variation :).
Are you a new collector also?

yeah, I have been interested in collecting for about 5 years but I was not so interested in the technical stuff until recently so I guess I only really have the knowledge of about a years proper collecting. And I have only recently started to collect noteworthy coins in the past 8 months really. How about you?

Carbon spotting on the obverse Oddly struck causing weakness on the stars and I believe a die clash on the reverse going through "Liberty" Looks lustrous and not cleaned but the carbon damage gives it an odd eye appeal IMO and to my eyes
Nice pickup and if that's a die clash even sweeter Good luck mate
