I have a Capped Bust half dollar grading vf20 Unfortunately it has a small hole in it right through the 5 in 50 on the reverse Dealers seem to only want to give me silver price I think it is worth more, it can at least be used as a filler It has a current retail of $100.00 to $110.00 Is silver value all I can expect I always thought a coin with a hole is worth half normal retail

If it's in VF then you should get more than silver value. A dealer can only offer you that much because a problem coin is hard to sell and that coin may be sitting in their shop for years before it sells. Because this coin is available readily in problem-free condition for not very much, people will not pay for a problem specimens. Still you can expect $15-$20 for it.

You could get more selling it yourself on ebay. You wont get full vf money but youll get more than melt. But very few if any dealers will pay more than melt for it, its not going to be a big money maker for them and the more expensive they have to make it the longer it will take to sell

I know the feeling. I have posted on this forum at one time an AU58 if not MS, 1834 Capped Bust Dime, and all I paid was $23 on ebay a couple of years back. The moral to the story is that this is a $1000 coin without the very small non-discriminating hole and yet in the "collectors" finicky world this is only a $23 coin. Now imagine what a collector/dealer will pay for a holed VF specimen at that same ratio off of retail; In your case, melt. https://goccf.com/t/124643&SearchTerms=1834

I actually think that collectors are way too harsh on holed coins, but not harsh enough on cleaned coins. I see really nasty looking cleaned coins sell for half price, but holed coins which otherwise look great selling for a very small amount. Strange, but that is the way the market is.

Could you post pictures of the coin? If it is an otherwise nice coin then it should sell for more than melt but if it has other problems like a harsh cleaning then it would be worth close to melt. Perhaps $15-25 if it has decent eye appeal IMO.
