Recently, I went to my doctor to prevent skin cancer. He told me about the ABC (Assymetric, Border and Color) tips to check myself during the year.

Starting with that, can we apply a kind of ABC technique to fake coin detection. Did anyone have develop a form of ABC check that can raise the flag about a fake coin?

Thanks!

No but you can use SPS, Surface, Price and Specifications.
Surface: to look at things like cast copy's, altered dates etc.
Price: If it looks like it's too good tot be true it usually is.
Specifications: Weight, Diameter, Thickness, make sure these are what they're supposed to be!

The vast majority of counterfeits are not cast, they are struck.
Your best defense against Canadian counterfeits is to purchase the CD produced by a member here, nickelsguy.

to add to this another major factor is the lettering and digits..In most cases you will find letters that are not formed correctly , perhaps missing parts such as the serrifs,ect..The spacing can be slightly off..

The numbers in most cases are larger than they should be..
Check the overall color and try to look at the surface for unusual texture , even in photos you can see this.

good point.. I was reading on another forum where one dealer said that the fields is a really good place to look as the counterfeiters just don't strike the coin the same way which makes for a different looking field... which may be noticable for a MS state coin.. but hard to pick up if the coin already exhibits a lot of signs of wear.
