Housed in a Guardmaster album, just finished my Canada silver dollar collection with acquisition of the 1951 Arnprior. Some of these dates, like the '45, '46, 47 and '48 have gotten pricey, and even tough to find in just the last year. Needless to say, the 1948 is the king of the series. Congratulations, it must be a nice feeling to complete a set. I have lots of sets that are nearly complete, but just missing a few coins. Steve

Congratulations on completing the set, something I have yet to do. A few years back my ex wife was in need of some quick cash and unfortunately my 48 was given up for the cause.

G'day & congratulations, I've started to collect CSDs: a very attractive series. By your reckoning, how many coins make up the set ? Peter in Oz

It all depends on what varieties you are wanting to collect if any. A straight year set wpould have 29 which includes the 1947 Maple Leaf variety. If you go into varieties there are, for example 5 1965 varieties, 2 1964 (minor) varieties, 2x waterline varieties for 1957 and 1952, 2x shoulder fold varieties in 1953, Arnprior varieties of 1950,1951 & 1955. 1947 was a big year for varieties with blunt and curved 7's, a 47 dot variety. I have made peace to 41 including varieties. The first silver dollar was minted in 1935 and the last minted in silver was 1967. 1940 through 1944 there was no production of the dollar coins.

I filled in this set using a GARDMASTER album, which has slots for all the years and varieties. I counted 40 coins. I can't improve on Paul's excellent answer except to say this album only has one slot for 1964.

Congrats! Now do you sit back and appreciate your accomplishment for a bit or are you already on to another set?

This is a really great question, Ken. One thing I liked about the Canadian silver dollars is that the set is "complete-able" if that's a word. You can find all the coins, and the most expensive one in unc. (the 1948) is going to be (at current prices)around $1800-2000. The 1947 maple leaf and pointed 7 - maybe $400-500. So it's doable. I have several collections in various states of completion, but am resigned to never being able to finish most of them. As far as Canadian, a dealer I trust and buy from here in Wash DC area says the quarters are the place to be right now. I also looked into the canadian nickels and am surprised at the high prices some of those are going for. But I am reluctant start a set I have no realistic chance of completing. I will finish my U.S. Peace dollar collection and keep adding to pre-1900 gold sovereigns though.

I love silver dollars and even though I don't consider myself as a silver dollar collector I probably have about 40 of them.I have to say though - anyone who says $1800-$2000 or even $400-$500 is doable is way out of my league.

well Bromac, there are only 40 coins in this collection, and those you mentioned are the most expensive ones. There has been an explosive run-up in price in those particular dates in just the last 18 months. I was lucky (or smart) to get them before then. Now take the U.S. Morgan silver dollars - a complete set is out of my league too. But I'm hopeful that (eventually) collecting an entire Peace dollar set is doable.
