Hi All,

Due to the tepid response on my other thread about SBA's and the little information on the internet that my Google-fu is turning up, I decided to create my own photo grading guide of SBA's. I'd figure I'd share it with you all.

Unfortunately it is not all encompassing and only includes mid to high mint state grades. The reason for this is that I wanted to be accurate and I didn't want to have to trust my own guesstimate at grading or that of the Internets.

To create this I took high res examples directly from PCGS's website and high res examples I found on Google Images (the ANACS graded coins). Unfortunately there does not seem to be many people having SBA's less than MS63 being graded, so it only covers what PCGS and ANACS often grade.

I hope this helps someone besides me.

Thank you Trent, This is a help to me. I always have trouble with grading on SBA's.
You did a great job on this and should consider doing other coins.

I was hoping to see some really worn coins! But it's good to know about the talons.
Rest in Peace

Glad it's helpful. If anyone can dig up high res photos of dead on accurately graded coins below MS63 where the grade isn't at all controversial, please let me know. I'll add them.

Or perhaps us CCF's members could work together to get a better photo grading guide going by pulling high res pics from the net (or our own collections) and come up with a common set of grades going down the scale that after being peer reviewed by many CCF'ers we all would be confident in using ourselves We'd need a good amount of planning and cooperation though.

I think the problem with SBA's is that they're simply not old enough to merit people pulling them from circulation and having them appraised. 50+ years from now XF and AU SBA's might be something the TPG's would be getting more of and help set a standard, but right now it appears only proof's and MS's are going to the TPG's. So who knows, possibly the onus is on us to set the definition of grades under MS63.

I should also note that from PCGS's population report, there are no SBA in MS coming in st MS69 or MS70.
