We don't have a list here per say. But a good place to buy ancients from reliable dealers is Vcoins.com.

But always remember one very important thing. Anyone selling coins is a "huckster" ...... and anyone buying them is a "sucker" !
A Wall St analyst once quipped "Stocks aren't bought ...... they are sold". Convincing someone that owning a metal disk that someone once used to buy a loaf of bread is worth a weeks pay is the ultimate con job !

Why not ? I sell coins ...... wanna to buy some ? Actually while I usually don't endorse any sellers (other than myself of course) I think that Lucernae out of Spain has by far and away the best variety price wise and condition for Roman Imperial issues. His ebay auctions are almost continuous and quite on the level ie no funny business ! The occasional 'gem' can even be found if you are patient and look hard enough (Arrrghh !). The $8 shipping is easily offset by making two or three purchases over a period of weeks and thus dividing up the 'damage'.

I cant agree that its a con. Like any work of art the value is determined by supply and demand. Ancient coins have a market value just like anything else. To own a piece of history from a bygone age for me represents very good value compared to the superficial garbage most of the rest of my spare cash goes on. Most new collectors are surprised at how cheap some ancient coins are considering there history. I know I was. I never imagined I would be able to afford to build a collection and was pleasantly surprised. Occasionally dealers put too much of a premium on there coins but at the same time you can over-pay at auctions too. The trick is to do enough research on the piece your interested in to know what is a fair price and exercise some discipline.

My words of course are to be taken somewhat 'tongue in cheek'. I have been buying coins since the age of 7 and 'ancients' since I was 17 ! My wife (who grew up rather poor in a hardline 'Stalinist' State) thinks I am quite mad. It is only in the past few years that she has come to understand that there are indeed 'bigger' fools out there than the one she married. My main point being if you look in an old auction catalogue from before collecting became popular with the masses it is almost comical how cheap stunning museum quality coins were selling for. Most of the readers and writers on this forum tend to realize that they have an 'obsession' and that they buy things when the personal budget should not allow any such non necessities. Lets face it ...... you generally can't eat coins and the madness which makes us buy these things is exploitable by people who sell them ! While I regret very few of the more expensive coin purchases I have made in the last 40 years I always try my best to remember the slogan coined by the writer Jean Shepherd
"In God We Trust ...... All Others Pay Cash"

Yes I do know where your coming from. I suppose you could argue there is an element of madness involved in collecting anything non-essential. My girlfriend also doubts my sanity. There is no doubt that prices have risen over time as collecting has gained in popularity though of course you also have to factor in the value of money/inflation etc during that time. I think when push comes to shove if you buy well then on top of being an extremely enjoyable and satisfying hobby ancient coins can also be a good investment. Every 'buyer' also has the opportunity to be a 'seller' after all.

Well ...... after already having indicted myself as a "Charlatan" and then proceeded to endorse the products of a seller to whom I have no ties besides 'satisfied customer', I will finish with just one last cliche
CAVEAT EMPTOR !
