1799 EagleIt looks like it was meant to be a Large Star variety, but the orientation of the stars is wrong and the weight is only 16.71g (see the questions posted in the listing). The weight should be 17.50g. The link to report is: Report Coin Violation

In Breen's "Guide to Counterfeit Detection", this coin along with the 1811 half eagle are the only two early date gold counterfeits mentioned, both being made with "Transfer copy dies". The lettering on the coin in the photo is rounded as compared to an original being sharp and angular. The surface is too uniform and shiny and lacks die marks. There are no planchet adjustment lines visable going through the letters. The lower right serif on the "L" in Liberty is very sharp on an original, not soft and slightly rounded as pictured. Mike

"1799 $10 Liberty Capped Bust Gold Coin High Grade NR" This is a pretty good discription for someone who says "I Know Nothing About Coins" An honest seller would not say this; "I'm Selling This Coin With No Guarantees". "All I Know Is This Coin Is 16.71 Grams Of Pure Gold" I wonder if the seller will guarantee that it is pure gold? "Do Your Own Research Before Bidding..." Buyer Beware the seller knows it's a phony "...As I Can Not Accept Returns" [:0] Why not? [:0] "Do Not Bid If You Do Not Accept These Terms." They already know your not going to be happy with this "coin" and are trying to make sure you don't try and get your money back. It's a dishonest attitude throughout this Auction. A genuine coin worth over 10,000 on sale on ebay starting price $100. Hummmm If it's genuine the seller has lost his shirt on this, If it's a fake than he has suckered someone out of their hard earned cash. Weight. My understanding is that weight is the hardest thing for a forger to get correct, especially if the origional coin is made of precious metal and the forgery is of a lesser metal. Someone should inform the seller what is the legal penalty is for selling counterfeit coins in the USA. In Australia the penalty is... Penalty: a)in the case of a person, not being a body corporateâ€"imprisonment for 10 years; or b)in the case of a person, being a body corporateâ€"$50,000. So if you buy it, and it's a fake,...The seller can go to prison for ten years. The seller may want to withdraw the auction.

Here in the states, he won't get into trouble. He has already covered himself with his disclaimer. The most that will/can happen is that ebay slaps his hand.

Ohhhhhhhh, so untrue. http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/...---000-.html quote: Whoever, except as authorized by law, makes or utters or passes, or attempts to utter or pass, any coins of gold or silver or other metal, or alloys of metals, intended for use as current money, whether in the resemblance of coins of the United States or of foreign countries, or of original design, shall be fined under this title [1] or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.
Technically, he's already broken Federal Law even if he pulls the auction because he has already attempted to "pass" it. Ignorance is not a legitimate defense in US courts. "I didn't know" doesn't fly, unless the judge is sympathetic and lenient.

It seems to me that lawyers and garage repair people are on a different timescale

300, 206, what's the difference? Given the the quality of his other data on the coin, those two numbers are not significantly different Gotta love his well thought out, considered response to Susan's email. Nice to see someone willing to learn from others. I'm sure he does well as a lawyer. Good job Susan!!!
