I normally do not get involved in other people's auction listings, unless the seller knowingly tries to scam newer collectors that think they're bidding on a genuine error note.

While checking the new error listings for a much needed error (posting thread on this tomorrow), I come across the following listing with a starting bid of $180.00 ;

2009 $5 U.S. MINT LINCOLN BILL MISCUT

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2009-5-U-S-...:RTQ:US:1123

I sent the seller the following message;

Quote:
Dear kettamaqua1,

FYI; This note is NOT a genuine error, it was made from a uncut sheet sold at the BEP, then cut to fool others into believing they're purchasing a genuine error... Serial Numbers above 96000000 are reserved for sheets of uncut currency and sold to collectors...

(*Broken-Coin)

And received the following reply;

Quote:

Dear *Broken-Coin (*not my real ebay ebay name)

It is not listed as an error. Take care.

I'm not going to get into a verbal disagreement with this seller, but when the title mentions a mis-cut Bill, one assumes it's a error note.

I ask any members who believe this listing is deceiving and playing on one's ignorance to politely ask the seller what makes this note worth $180.00 and post their reply here.

(note; I mention my 20 year ignorance on a series 1988A error in tomorrows thread),

curious to see what they say

Just thought I'd chime in a comment here; I agree with you, these sheets were reserved for collectors, as per the 96 meg series serial numbers. The seller is purposely misleading his description of this item. He obviously is putting out the idea that this is indeed an error note, not only due to his asking price, but if you notice he has it listed in the Items Specific catagory as 'Coins & Paper Money>Paper Money: US > Errors'.

Agreed the seller is definitely mis-leading in his description.

To me if you say miscut, you are saying it's an error. A better description would be "cut to emulate miscut." Very misleading.

Fixguy- I wish ebay monitored those reports but I don't believe they do. I've never seen action on any item I've reported in about 14 years of using ebay

I get listings removed every day. They most certainly do monitor reports.

Not only have they taken action on my behalf but they have also frozen a pay pal account for fraud. I take being swindled very serious and I'm glad they do too.

I stumbled onto this thread while researching bills and asked the seller...

Dear kettamaqua1,

I'm curious how cutting a sheet of $5's in the wrong spot is worth $180?
I think you should inform people that serial numbers that high come as sheets and this was "miscut" by a private party.

And this was the reply...

I'm curious as to why you bother me. I can sell anything for whatever price I want. Move on. I sell for clients. Good day.

- kettamaqua1

I guess I sounded harsh but that was not my intention. However, as a new note collector, not knowing the numbers could've made a serious dent to my wallet -a dent that could've been spent better elsewhere - a dent that only hurts the buyer as there is no intrinsic value to the bill.
