Please-Help-Me-Identify-A-Find... Please-Help-Me-Identify-A-Find...

My nephew found this on my parent's land and they don't know how to upload pics, so I told my mom I'd look into it for her. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

The design looks a bit like an '8 escudos gold cob' to me but the way that the surfaces look to me makes me think that it is unfortunately not gold. You could try a specific gravity test to determine if it is gold or not. But one way to tell if it is brass or gold is to rub it with your fingers and smell it, If you get the strong metallic smell then it is likely not gold but a replica.

Having said that, I hope it is real! Very exiting :D

Matt :)

I appreciate it and will try that next time I with the coin. Fortunately she didn't clean it so the finish is "as-is" from the dirt. I will say that it's heavy for its size.

That is a good sign, The weight of one of those coins should be around 27g, So if you weigh the coin and it is close to that it can give you a good indication to if it is real, but given the odd shape of the coin it might be a little lighter than that even if it is real.

Good luck and hope it works out :)

Hello and welcome.

Sadly, no, this coin is a replica, not a genuine gold cob. We've seen pieces exactly like this, same shape and everything, on the forum before. In this thread someone says they may have been given away by a bank.

Thank you very much. I'll check out the material it's made of and confirm. If nothing else I learned something new and it's piqued my interest in a potential new hobby of coin collecting.
