Yours is an ordinary business strike. Compare the ribbon on the reverse of yours to this image of the pattern coin http://uspatterns.com/j410p481.html  Notice how the ribbon touches the rim on the pattern coin whereas it doesn't on yours. -MV |

As far as differences go, it mainly is seen on the obverse. I have several 3 cent nickels b/c I consider it a great series and the highest weight I have seen on a mint specimen is 1.94 if I'm lucky. The ribbon bow on my coin also displays a clear large 5 and what I can only assume a number 6 before it. There are also smaller examples of this present throughout. The obverse is what I suggest looking at as previously mentioned. However, I'm not trying to play an expert and appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

LOL I have noticed this claim. Ok here is what I have. The reverse's design is identical. the 65 (or what I assume is a 65)on the bow you can actually see (faintly) on some examples. I understand that you are going to get some faint weird numbers letters from time to time on coins. It happens. I am going to focus on the obverse unless someone sees something on the reverse that catches their eye and wants a close up...which may take me a bit to get done but I will do my best. I chose this close up to start out with in black and white to have better contrast. To me, it shows the bangs of the hairline, also a clear 6 thrown in there, and on the very top of the hairline there is some lettering. I will try to amp up my close ups soon. To those that have looked at my previous pics it is a definite step in the right direction though :-) Now, it could be something common but there is also lettering along the cheek bone, on eye lids, above the eye. Again, with they weight and b/c it isn't the fanciest coin I am leaning on essai coin. But, it could be nothing and if I don't get a confirmation I'll move on the the next coin. Which I will do anyway.

Weight is within tolerance (1.94 grams +/- .26 grams) I don't see anything on those photos to make me think it is anything other than a normal coin.

Thank goodness this isn't baseball because I would be steeeeriked out lol! Ok, I will shut my mouth on this one. The hairline I will just assume is a poor strike. I just want to say that for those of you out there that have found a way to take a pic 1/100th of an inch or less in size with clarity...props to you. Right now I would put you up there with Pulitzer Prize winners. I can take a nice Panorama though! I will continue on and say a Hail Mary before my next post.

Thank you and yes I will figure this out. I am on a mission to make this work. Not to get too far off the topic but I found some cool info on trial pieces for recent modern US coinage early this morning. The report was dated Aug. 31,2012 explaining a new alternative metal study on our current coinage. I.e trial piece coins! Now, this report is something like 400 pgs long so I haven't gone through everything but I am going to attach a page that lists the metals involved. The description of the nonsense piece as they are called is very vague and from what I've read so far depicts a picture of Martha Washington on obverse, a "scene" on reverse, and letters that were scrambled. I just want a picture for my screen saver is all lol! Anyway, I love love love learning about stuff like this so thank you US Mint for keeping things always interesting and fun! Maybe someday sooner than later I can help contribute something to help them out.   |
