@ Koin Hunter, if you don't mind my asking, how did you get your insurance? All we could get was a $5,000 rider on our household insurance. Better than nothing, but is there a company out there that specializes in coin collections?

I display my coins in this type of Ikea glass case: But usually only less expensive coins go there. No 1912-14 $10 gold coin in there.

This is how I display my coins. But like I said before, when strangers are at my house, or friends of my kids, I cover them up.

legouge , it's a nice display , do you change it up every so often ? I like the cabinet when closed up it does a nice job of concealing whats in it .

Thanks piscesdave. I do have fun switching the display around once in a while. Right now I have NCLT at the bottom, bullion and and circulation in the middle and top shelves.

I am considering getting all my silver loon strikes put into PCGS slabs. Not because I care about the grades, or state of preservation, but because I can lock them away, and create a virtual PCGS showcase set. If I want to share my collection with like-minded colleagues or friends, I just give them the web link to the showcase set, and tell them the real coins are in the safety deposit box (especially the 2007 silver loon!).
Here is a showcase set I built with test tokens... as an example... (you might have to cut and paste the link into your browser, direct links to PCGS registry and showcase sets sometimes don't work from CCF).

@ SPP Ottawa Quote: (especially the 2007 silver loon!) I was thinking of sending two of them to PCGS ,it a little pricey. What do you think of this , is it worth it .

I suggest anyone who has a display case to invest or purchase in a Pitbull or Doberman for protection.

As far as safes go, I recently bought a new fireproof gun safe. It is just over 950 lbs empty lol. I don't think anyone will walk off with it now that its full :-) It has a 2.5 hour burn rating http://winchestersafes.com/legacy26-7-1.aspxI still want to build a display case but when I do I'm hoping I can just lift it up and lay it on the top shelf of the safe when I'm on vacation or away from home for extended amounts of time with work.

Where is the logic in displaying your coins right underneath your DISPLAYED weapon, OcalaFlorida?
If people are coming for the coins they know you have, they'll take the weapon too and use it against you. I just don't get the logic in displaying your weapons or why you would display them in the same place as your coins.
My thoughts are these: if you choose to display them then you should tuck them away each night into a safe place and replace them with decoys. Set up a camera inside looking out and have it on 24/7. If you ran a business your insurance company would not cover you for leaving them in plain sight and outside of a locked box. Treat your home like it was a bank if you have valuables lying around. All it takes is one unguarded minute for someone to open your door and run towards the place they know you stash your coins. If your coins are safe but the person knows where you kept them during the day then you have saved your rear and can follow up on some leads.
Remember that currency collector in Nova Scotia who displayed his collection on his walls? He kind of had it coming. (Not saying he deserved it; that's not my message. But if you drive flashy cars expect to be targeted more often by crooks. I read police reports and study the habits of these people - I'm very vigilant.)
If you're going to rely on dogs...don't. They can be bypassed easily. But if you insist then get females as they are more loyal and more vicious. And get TWO or more dogs and make them sleep at different points of entry around your house. The reason I suggest two dogs is that one dog yapping could mean they bark at every car and the mailman, but having two confirms that something is not right. Remember too that dogs can trash your display, lol. Some dogs are pretty stupid. Good deterrents but a hardcore criminal will not care about your dog's life. Sorry to sound grim but this is a reality with this hobby. Do it at your own risk.

"replace them with decoys" Haha you should replace them with those fake coins everyone has been talking about. I can picture the theft in my head now with egg on his face when he finds out the truth lol.
I'm starting to rethink how I store my coins after reading some of the replies. The collection keeps growing and sometimes my coins are just everywhere. After I buy something new I like to leave it out to enjoy for a while before I store it somewhere. The thought of someone I know stealing from me has never crossed my mind, but I'm sure it could happen.

I am torn on this but I am now leaning in one direction.... and that is to display your coins.
No, I am not saying have them at the front door. But I am saying, if you can, show them. If you are going to be near somewhere, have them out...
But how? Well, in my office in my desk at my residence I have them out in display. Everything I gotten so far in 2014 is displayed out on the desk, neatly in order. I also have a few coins from the tail end of 2013.
Why did I do this? I said to myself, "its a shame I lock them up and they wont see the light of day, this is stupid".
The fact is, I cant enjoy them being locked up. I cant appreciate the reason why I got the coin if I cant see it. I cant learn more about the theme, event, or subject is the represented by the coin.
For some of us for various reasons, we might not be able to share these coins with others. So yea, I got tired of buying, looking at it and putting it away. Blah!
When I look at say my Sochi Olympic hockey coin, I want to remember how much I enjoyed the games, how I watched as many events as I could, and the good times. Better that than to say "nice coin, I like it" and then off it goes into storage.
So I mean, display them, if not all, some, the favorites. Maybe you have doubles... why not have a double coin out. Heck, now I gave everyone a reason to buy 2 of every coin they like... lol
Obviously we want to always be safe... but we should have fun too.

Besides my small display for my current coins, I also have a coin collecting software. CoinManage. With the software, I am able to take picture of my coins, and us that as my reference. It also records all the details of the coin(s). So, even though the majority of my collection is 'put away', I can check them out anytime, I just can't 'handle' them.

@yup7676, ! But like you said, not at the front door, or in plain site near windows, etc. I have mine in a corner of my basement, in a lovely antique cabinet. I cover them up when strangers are expected, as shown in a previous post of mine in this thread. If I'm going to collect something, I like to be able to look at it, so should other members of my family and trusted friends.
