Hey folks I was wondering on the question should I or shouldn't I display parts of my collection in a curio case . Some of the coins I have look very nice under a bright light and would be nice to display in a table top curio cabinet but a few people have told me to do so would be telling others that I have a collection and might lead to some disappointment down the road with missing coins . Do any of you fellow collectors display your coins openly and if so how and how many at a time ? Is it risky to display them .

Piscesdave, any time you display anything of value, or even indicate you have it, there is some risk. I know there are many people on this forum who are careful never to reveal their names and/or their location, and are very discreet about having a coin collection in real life. That being said, displaying a few coins in a locked cabinet shouldn't be unduly risky and somehow it just seems wrong to keep all your coins locked up and hidden. (Having said that, the majority of my coins are, indeed, mostly out of sight.)

I have a shadow box designed to display coins. It'll hold 25 or 30. The remainder are in a bank safely box. Every calendar year, the display is emptied, and I start fesh for the New Year.

I do display my coins and banknotes in a lockable large cabinet. However, when I know strangers will be coming, I cover the window so no one can see what is behind.

I don't display at home, but I do display at coin shows and coin club meetings.

One of the questions I've been asking myself since I started collecting coins is where in the heck am I going to put all this stuff ? We recently bought a safe for my watch collection,wifey's jewelry and legal docs and it's pretty well full already. My wife asked me "your not going to buy another 400 lb safe are you for those stupid coins" ? I didn't tell her but it crossed my mind ! lol So being serious here it comes down to putting it in my safety deposit box which I don't like or just hiding it when we're not home. So last night I went to Walmart and bought a plastic bin with several drawers and that will be the home of my collection.(until I can convince her that I need another safe !)

Very risky, I worked for marvel comics for years when I was younger and I used to display stuff all over my aptment and it would go missing or get damaged by people contacting it.
And that was comic, coins are way more dangerous, for example every 5 minutes outside in a car you see cash for gold/silver/coins signs. All it takes is a person to associated your place or collection with there need.
Most thief of stuff comes from people you know a friend, family or someone they have mentioned it too but if you do display it I would put it under a wall mounted rifle rack with a ar-15 & shotgun.
I am bitter to subject... I had stuff stolen by 10 year trusted friend and family.
I didn't have strangers over and only close friends and family that all had good jobs.

@OcalaFlorida,
Your 100% correct ! I probably have a severe case of "it can't happen To me". We haven't had any trouble in our little secluded part of Nova Scotia in 20 years and probably have a false sense of security !.... most of the time we actually leave the dam doors open when we go out and don't turn the alarm on ! But again Sir, you are 100% right,it only takes once and we're overdue....crime is everywhere. As my collection grows I'll probably have to rethink how and where I'm going to store & display it. Thanks for sharing your experiences !

It's just that it seems that to have spent the time and money to build a collection and have to hide it and not show/share the beauty of some of the best of your best takes away from the joy of the hobby . But I can understand the risks of loosing what we spent that time and money to aquire .

Koin Hunter , I am curious , can you please share a little info on the star shaped coin . It looks nice and I have not seen a coin in that shape before , it is hard to clearly see all the coins in their case's but I am assuming that you have the coins displayed in themes and that the star shaped one is part of a horse or unicorn theme ? . With the beauty of some coins they just call out to be on display . Very nice display .

Most of our coins are out of sight. One day I will display but for my own enjoyment. I even lie about my location. Once bitten twice shy
