Daveodd, I wish I could help but I can't see enough details of the coin. In the Sheldon book he says that the 1800 is the most difficult to identify. There was only one reverse hub die so the reverse characteristics are mostly based on die cracks and recutting by the engraver. There were 27 varieties in total. So maybe a closer look at the obverse will help? Can you see if this is an 1800/79 overdate? That would reduce the number of possible varieties. Most often you can see a loop inside the first 0 that was punched over the 9. The 8 is punched over a 7 and sometimes more difficult to see.
thanks for the reply. I can't see enough of the date to tell if it is one of the overdate varieties. I agree that 1800 is a tough year, but for some reason I have found that 1802 and 1803 are more difficult years for me to attribute the varieties.
