It's a variety listed by Snow (S28).
He calls it "Spiked Lip".

His description is:
"This is very scarce and interesting variety. The die gouge out of the upper lip is very dramatic."

Interesting variety. I was aware of this variety but I had never seen it before. Snow give it a 3 star rating. Thanks for posting.

That is just caused by a die scratch or gouge isn't it?

The die would have the gouge where it was nicked by a tool or whatever, resulting in a raised surface on the coin.

I've seen a few of these--but I don't have the Snow guide for 1899 to lookup.
Too bad the coin is in the hands of this seller--a lot he sells are cleaned, whizzed, retoned, etc. "AU+"? No Way.

That's a nice place for a file mark. Yeah...I can go crazy looking for a specific variety; I have better luck just scanning for a longer list.
One of these was reported on CCF some years ago.

I find coin shows are the best place to find varieties--there are far fewer eyes than eBay--good luck, post your finds!

Thanks guys, not the best condition but I bet it will look better in hand. Man I went through over 1100 1902's. This one surprised me the way he had the reverse as his main pic.

This one is a bit crusty but see if you can figure out why I speculated on this one. Bill doesn't take the best pics...http://www.ebay.com/itm/17100352957....m1439.l2649

I suspect it could grade into VG. I think you lucked out with the rev as main picture.
