I've a feeling that the colouring is down to corrosion of the nickel, and the lack of date would be from wear.

It was in my dad's collection. So is there any chance it's a 'brown' nickel?

Sure, there's a chance. But I don't think it is. It's either heavily worn, or a metal detect.

I would say it was probably found in the ground. If you look on the reverse the little nicks or scratches show to be lighter about the color of a nickel.

And unlike most years for Canadian nickels, US nickels are 75% copper--so the copper gets toned quite easily given the right soil chemistry.

it is just corroded. can't see a date on it.
