What do you see on the 1880--the "broken 88"?

Lol, I'm not really sure it is what I think but it's not the 88's. I went through a lotta coins today. I was determined to find a 1902 S-4 but also that 1880.

I seldom find a variety I'm looking for--congrats again! So I often blow up seller's pics looking for something. I almost see a break on the first 8; unsure about the second--I'll check my book when I get home. But it's definitely not Snow-4; the date position is different.

I don't have an 1880 S-8 in my Snow guide. Is it a new variety?

Interesting--that's the first time I've seen an S-8. I now see what you mean--let us know how that turns out. "Images by Daniel Carr"--he must be an IHC variety collector.

I like Carr's altered states coins. I have a few of them.

Raymo, I took another look at that coin, comparing to the S-8. From the looks of the date position, I think they are different dies. But who knows, perhaps it's something else--or you at least have a repaired digit punch.

Hmmm I never even looked at that. I'm not out much and the coin will be better than his scans. I tried to get him to at least get a USB microscope for his ebay pics but he's too old and set in his ways. I'm always shocked at how nice his coins look in hand.

Dang it, you're right it's a different position. So much still to learn.

I like this variety, primarily due to the boldness of the die gouge. I don't know how rare it is but I have seen very few for sale. Snow gives it a 3 star rating and calls it one of the top varieties for the 1900's. Nice pickup.
