I went out metal detecting for the first time with my Bounty Hunter Quick Silver, (awesome, I know) hoping to pull up some coins. After three hunts this is all I got. So far I've found 5 coins. All from 1960 or later. I've gone twice to a metro park and once to my grandparents farm. Is this ratio of junk to coin normal?! ... the youtube videos make it look so easy...

It's about 300 to 1 ratio in the gold fields down under in Victoria

That's what your going to get most of the time..more junk then goodies. Patience will pay off. I must have found a thousand pieces of lead from bullets before I dug my first gold nugget.

Will even a slightly better detector help me discriminate against what is worth digging and what isn't? The one I have now basically has four different tones. Iron, Al/Zinc, Al/5c, and coins. Even when I turn it to only beep at coins it still turns up trash!
What I could probably afford is a Garrett 250, maybe a 350. Will I notice a difference or am I just paying to hear a different noise?

The youtubers, like nuggetnoggin, have been detecting for YEARS! I've just started out last year, and I'm just getting good with my Ace 250. You gotta spend a lot of swinging hours, and you'll have the junk at first. Keep Trying!

It will, but I suggest going out a few times more before you invest in an expensive detector. Just be patient and silver will come. I found my first silver ring and silver coin with a bounty hunter. It'll take lots of experience before you can differentiate what is in the ground, even with a better detector. It can be frustrating at times, believe me I've been there, but the first cool find will get you hooked and it'll be worth all the frustration. Also do some research around the place you live. Find out what kind of history there is and where it took place.

Sorry I seemed so blunt I was at work in the laboratory so I really didn't have the time to add any thing further, O.K. on page 20 in the thread "Aussie Gold Finds" in the detecting finds forum you'll see at the bottom of the page rubbish from that detecting trip remember this is all from the gold fields,so I dig every thing that make my detector click over as you never know if it's something interesting or maybe an antique buried in the ground or an odd coin.
good luck detecting

I used the same detector for a year and was finding mostly trash. I discriminated everything but coins and had much better results.

Thanks everyone for the tips! I've been stuck in the house for the last couple days so I haven't been able to get out and detect. Hopefully tomorrow and hopefully I'll find something awesome!
Any tips on how to go about researching sites to detect in? I live just south of Detroit.. any info on this area in particular that I should look into?

I like to use this site to check out the development/redevelopment of areas. http://www.historicaerials.com/I live in an area that had plenty of activity in the late 1700s - 1940s. Then in the 1950s & 60s it was completely redeveloped. All of the earth with artifacts was either removed on buried with new fill dirt to accommodate the new development. I'm still hoping to find something cool from that era one day.

Some detectorists dig it all - I'm not one of them. I tend to cherry pick the signals that I dig...my time afield is limited, so I only pick the quarter, silver, and deepies.

I have a White's DFX. How would I tell it to discriminate to only find coins and/or jewelry? I already know how to set it to the coins/jewelry program. Thanks!

BernieZ, you will have to break out the manual for your DFX. If you don't have a manual, search online to get the descrim instructions.

I dig it all regardless of the VDU or tone. mostly because the more I remove each time the less trash there is the next time I go. Also every once in a while a weak trash signal turns out to be a bit of Jewelry.

I started off with an Ace250. Worked, but I always had tons of trash too. For the money I really like my ATPro/gold. I cut my trash intake by 90percent. Its pretty accurate when it discriminates targets.Good Luck and Happy Hunting!!
