First let me apologize again for asking a question about what is probably Machine Doubling. I thought I knew the difference (especially after reading this post http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...IC_ID=51410) but here I am again. The following pics are from a 1976D Ike.

I thought that the doubling/md would be consistent as to being on one side and top or bottom throughtout the coin. You can see in this pic that it occurs on both sides (on the right and left in EPLURBIS and on the left in UNUM).

I also thought that MD would be only a single doubling, but this coin is tripled on several devices. Also, it that "notching" on the right foot of the A?

Then, I thought that the shelving or doubling would be evenly distributed along the device but from these pics it is clear that the doubling is much broader in some areas and angles back to the device.

It appears that the device is reduced (note top of E, R and one leg of the star).

So, once again, I am as confused as ever about this (and many other things in life). Any guidance anyone would give me (again) would be appreciated. Thanks!

That is all Machine Doubling. The flat, shelf like appearance that reduces the side of the devices. On a doubled die the doubling is enlarged. Kind of like an over inflated inter tube. Note on the Trust of The 1974 I posted the other day:

On one side of the coin you can see a stronger spread than on the other side:

The devices on one side of the coin show a spread between the devices, the other side the devices look enlarged, but no spread. Note how they are rounded. On your coin you see the typical shelf/step down of the devices. Hub doubling is different in 9 different classes and all can be minor or major. On Machine Doubling the die is normal. The overall size of the devices are normal. It is the machine that damages the devices. See how the edges of the devices where the Machine Doubling is, is vertical. On the hub doubling we see a rounded edge like normal contour of the devices.
