I have just bought an old collection of Chinese charms, along with a few coins. The collection these were from was put together around 1910, and most have old tags attached. I've one a thread for each of them on the ID forum or ancient coin forum.

This piece appears to be quite a well struck Pan Liang coin. Its weight is 29.36 grams (!) and diameter of 48 mm. My guess is that this is a particularly early coin under the Zhou Dynasty rather than being struck later under the Chin Dynasty. Or, perhaps it is, like most of the other pieces in the collection I bought, a charm.

If anyone can shed any light on this, or knows of another example to compare to, i'd be most interested. Thanks

looks like the symbols you see on han dynasty coins, but that would be in exceptional shape for one from that period....but could be?

have you looked here, this place is great for chinese coins..

Have looked at primal trek - a brilliant website, but nothing yet. Have just now found a possible match to a coin type at calgary coins, also a great Chinese coin online reference. It seems the very earliest of these coins were issued around 300 BC by Chin whilst they were a warring state under the Zhou Dynasty - then much smaller versions of the coin were struck later in the Han dynasty. Still, 48 mm and 29 grams is huge even for the earlier pieces and the condition is rather good - so an interesting piece, and might have a decent value with a bit of luck! Hopefully I can find a piece with a similiar size somewhere, might shed a little more light

The inscription, "ban liang", means "half a liang" - it's supposed to indicate the weight. The liang, or "Chinese ounce", never weighed more than 16 grams, so a coin claiming that a liang weighs about 60 grams is definitely a modern charm.

Actually there are several known examples of early chou pieces being heavier at around 25 - 30 grams. Such as this example of Harrell 7.1

I am surprised. Hartill does say that category 7.1 "includes some very heavy coins", but I would not have expected over double the typical weight and three times the official weight. Still, yours is clearly of a much more modern fabric.

I do agree with you there. I think mine may have made a coin-like charm - but I do think the patination is real enough - hard to date exactly but only guarantee it isn't 20th century as I've got a strong provenance going back about 104 years on it. I'll keep digging around and see if anything else comes up
