I was wondering if anyone has encountered one of these copper Sears tokens before. What caught my eye was the inscription across the top of the obverse "Contains Authentic Material". What sort of material are they talking about? The main device on the obverse is a forward looking portrait of the Statue of Liberty, with the inscription "LIBERTY" beneath it. Any info will be appreciated. I have attached a couple of photos. Thanks in advance.

I believe the point is that they contain copper from the statue of Liberty, removed during the restoration. They are very common and around here most LCS's have a couple and they sell for a dollar. Don't know how much as with most of this kind of souvenirs has the old material melted and mixed with new to make it go farther.

At the time they were being sold by Sears, they were advertised as being made from 95% "authentic materials" - presumably copper removed from the SoL during its restoration.

Sears sold them in sets of three housed in a plastic case for $15.00.

I got mine for free inside a Sears catalog at that time.

Thanks for the info. This is an interesting little piece of history in a way then. If I remember correctly, I pulled this out of the "five for a dollar" junk box and my old LCS.

I found one in a bag of small dollar coins a few weeks ago.
