I have a opportunity to purchase this Trade dollar. I know there will be some that will say do not buy these unless they are slabbed. But sometime these can be bought at a good price, when they are not slabbed. I know it was bought from a good coin shop in Panama city Florida. My first impression is that it's real. About the only concern I have is it might have had a old cleaning. In hand the fields look somewhat reflective. The weight looks right. The letters and numbers look sharp and I see no sign of cast marks. I would like some expert opinions on the coin, and what might be a good price to pay for it. If I do purchase the coin it will be a upgrade for my type set. The one I have is low grade and not attractive. First time using my new calipers.

First off - I don't know Trade dollars very well but I am an avid collector of Morgans. I frequently buy unslabbed coins because I like to be able to hold them and have them in books (I'm really old school I guess) - AND I have some confidence in my abilities to ferret out fakes If you think its real (and it seems to be from your detailed descriptions) I wouldn't be too afraid. Make sure it "sounds" right though. The 90% silver coins have a distinctive ring. That said - in buying coins like this - I ALWAYS assume they have been cleaned unless its been certified otherwise. Its hard to tell usually. It you want to make sure its not cleaned you'll need a professional opinion - which would likely entail a detailed examination of he actual coin. That said - my opinion on these things is if you like the coin - and the price is right - go for it!

MV, Thanks for the link. Quote: Characteristics of striking: Usually seen well struck. However, among large mintage issues such as this there are many variations in striking quality. Some have a prooflike surface, especially on the obverse. This makes me feel a little better about the reflective surfaces I see.

Negative comments are welcome too ... The more I look at this coins .. and compare it to slabbed ones on ebay. I am thinking if I did buy this coin and send it to NGC .. it might come back XF/AU details .. cleaned. For me there could be a price where this would be better then the one I have. Which would you rather have in your type set ... of course some could say .. neither

It's normal for a coin to have light scratches being that old.
But doesn't the eagle seem a little bright? That probably means someone used something to bring out details on the feathers. My guess would be the pawnshop guy did it and used silver cleaner.

From the posted pictures .. I can understand what your seeing. There are two LED lights shining on this coin .. in hand the eagle does stand out.

Eye appeal a slam dunk on your other example. It looks like a good up grade to me.

I haven't had very good luck with Trade dollars. I bought one off ebay and when I got it I really checked it over to make sure it was legit. It weighed correctly, had the silver "ring" to it, and looked good overall. I had a local dealer look at and he thought it was real. I sent it in to ANACS to have it graded, and it came back a counterfeit. I won't buy one anymore unless it is slabbed.

apparently I'm not very good at posting replies since I sent the same one three times. My apologies.

To grr601 - interesting story and a real bummer - I'm probably not alone in thinking some good quality pictures of that particular coin would be insightful and useful for everybody. There are some really good fakes out there - especially the last few years. Thanks for sharing the experience.

I should have included that I contacted the seller well over a year after I bought the Trade dollar and he gave me a full refund. He was quite gracious about the whole matter.

Well - that is an honest seller you're dealing with. Kudos to him/her!
