Almost all of my 2006 nickels have a dot (die chip?) on the beaver's face. Both the steel and cupronickel ones have it. How common is this, and are they worth keeping? Thanks. I'll put up some photos later.

Those dots are most likely to be die pits--pits caused over-polishing the die.One die can last 1-2 million strikes.

They are all in the same position and in the steel ones they have the same shape too. So, die pit?
So they are quite common then?

And is it worth it to look for minor varieties?

Good evening

All 5 ยข 2006 has this defect.

There was an article in the "World Coin News" February 2010 by Ken Potter explaining these points.

These are occurred during the Die sinking of the matrix.

I made a French traduction of article for members of Numicanada.

See this review in my post on page 2 dated:

I don't understand French but from what I can get from Google Translate I get that all the 2006s have them because of a faulty master die. I'm not keeping them then.

Is it worth it to look for minor varieties? They're usually very small and hard to find.

Worth it, money-wise? Usually no. But if you like collecting errors for the sheer sake of the enjoyment of finding and having them, then I say yes. I look for all sorts of minor penny varieties; lots of collectors collect all sorts of errors/varieties/error varieties for all different reasons. Go for what makes your juices flow. As long as you like it, it's all good.

So far I collect because I enjoy looking at them again, and thinking of what a neat find this is.
