A friend of mine recently bought this off ebay for $25. First time I saw and handled (well I guess technically you're not supposed to handle them but since he already opened the capsule so) a proof in person. The obverse is stunning. A mirror bust on a frosted background, it's gorgeous. He's not a collector as far as I know, or maybe I just started getting him interested in coins? He's among the few people who I show my collection to. I guess like anyone who just got interested in something they are prone to making rather silly mistakes to whoever is more knowledgeable. I've made a lot of mistakes myself too but I'm learning. Sorry for there bad pics, I snapped them real quick and I didn't have my photographing set. It's upstairs in my room and I can't go get it now. Anyway, he had the capsule opened (with a cutter knife, and it shows) and he had touched the coin all over. I don't think he knows hold a coin by its rim only. There are fingerprints all over the bust, and a couple of scratches on the reverse. It's also got a couple of rim dings but it's not obvious. I'm kind of reluctant in holding it too, I don't have any gloves with me now. Question: will acetone clean the coin without hurting it? I don't know what the coloured part is made from and I don't want to ruin it. I am currently borrowing it from him and I'll have it until dinnertime. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by Altaira 04/11/2014 2:59 pm

Specimen (not proof).
I doubt the colour would survive acetone but on the bright side, it's not an expensive coin and can easily be replaced or just enjoyed.
I'm sure many of these glow in the dark coins made there way to the hands of kids who will abuse (and have fun) with them.

He insisted it was a proof. I said specimen, since it has lines. I wonder where he read that it was a proof? Either way, it's still so pretty. Can I get a q-tip/cotton swab and use it to gently rub acetone on the queen's bust?
Edit: It will not? Why? I've used acetone before for new fingerprints and it works. I believe these are rather fresh prints, he just got the coin yesterday.

The acetone will dissolve the paint.

So I can't just rub it on the queen because it will still dissolve the paint? I'm not going to soak it. Okay.

In my experience, once a finger print has "set" and is visible, there isn't much you can do to remove it without harming the surface of the coin.

I can see it only when I tilt the coin in a way, it's not very obvious, but it's there. It still can be rubbed off with a finger even though that leaves a lot of streaks. I'm not going to try that again...

This isn't "Proof" in any way. Specimen. The obverse reminds (only reminds) the Reverse Proof, due to the mirror finish.
Now, this coin not the silver one. means, the base metal does not afraid of fingerprints. Try to use some cotton, and in accurate manner just wipe the surface. The cotton probably absorb the oily fingertips.
In addition, if you like the "perfect", buy another one ($30 max) and this give to your friend.

A better question is why remove the coin from the capsule in the first place. I would never do it with my coins.

I suppose he doesn't know not to. It was his first coin after all.
