Need some help from you smarter than me people[That means about everyone] on a mark on a $10 Liberty eagle. I just had a chance to look at it and have no idea what it is. My son[I'm to stupid for that too] just took a pic of the coin and if you look at the bottom by the D you will see the size of the square. It looks like a mark made by a punch and in the next picture taken through an inverted lens[pic is backwards] 20X magnifier you can kinda/sorta see what the square looks like. I then had the lad draw a picture of what he could see to help describe it. Any info will be appreciated. barry

Chop mark? I'm not sure. It's not anything that is going to drive the value up, if anything it reduces the numismatic appreciation and drops the coin down to a melt value scenario.

Chop mark? I am sure it is not going to increase the value and I will do more harm to it than that anyway. I always wanted an eagle to slap down on the bar for a drink and a sandwich like we seen in the old westerns. Not into graded stuff in anyway as I'm more of a hands on and touchy/feely kinda person. Only thing I ever had that was perfect were my new born kids that didn't take long to tarnish and deteriorate.

Then that's spot-on weight.

That's cool. The mark makes me think of a brand, me being a farmer and all. I thought aybe someone would be familiar with it.

Your drawing is backwards, isn't it? I believe it's the number "21", written in Arabic numerals. This would mean that it is in fact not a genuine coin, but a replica made in the Middle East, where making fake gold coins from other countries is perfectly legal so long as they are made of real gold and the fineness of the gold used to make it is marked. "21" indicates the fineness, 21k or 0.875 fine. This would mean there's slightly less gold in this piece than there is in a genuine American 10 dollar coin. You can see some marked Middle Eastern jeweller's replica British sovereigns in this thread and this thread.

Thank you Sap. As the lad was looking through the same inverted magnifier his pic could quite likely be backwards. I thank you for the info as I now may know what the square means. Really appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it.

Glad I read this thread. I'm always learning something from people on this site. Either by trying to answer questions or by reading posts from people that have the answer.

Sap I ain't got enough posts to use the PM feature so I will thank you on the thread you helped me out on. I now have the money I spent on the coin back in my possession. Thank you.
