I came across this 1892 Barber half dollar graded Proof 63 by PCGS. It has quite a few hairlines on the reverse and I am surprised it made Proof-63. I'm certainly no expert at grading proof Barbers (although I did once own a PCGS Proof-62 Barber dime that had no hairlines). Is it unusual for a coin like this to make Proof-63?

That is a SUPERB coin. I've seen lots of proofs with hairlines.. Don't know why, looking forward to seeing some answers.

Since the hairlines are on the reverse my money would be on that it was kept in a cabinet with velvet lined drawers going all the way back to 1892 and stored with the obverse up.

Those aren't hairline. They're die polish marks.

I dont believe it is, those lines look too straight for that and much to thick

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question.

Once again I've gained some insights and knowledge about U.S. coins.

I agree with die polish lines.

Hairlines are marks below the surface of the coin. Hairlines reflect light.

Die Polish appears as raised lines above the surface of the coin. Die polish does not reflect light.

I just posted this to seller:

You might also have better luck allowing a 7-day return. This is a pricey
coin and our members do judge ebay sellers on return policies.

I am matthewvincent on the topic.

Paul, your title is incorrect. This is a half dollar. You still have time to edit it.
Also, within the text you reference Barber quarter. Change this as well.
