Good day all , I was looking for some help with this loon dollar . I find the colour to be different from other loon dollars I have . I found this in my pocket change and it immediately stood out due to the colour . is it just tarnished or did they produce this loon year ( 2011 ) in this reddish bronze colour . Just curious as to what has this coin looking so different then other loons . Thanks for the replies and good hunting .

You can see the queens head is different(Machin head and old age queen) on the two...The first is older and that is an oxidised color (Proper fro circ coin)..The newer one is proper color for it, shows some sign's of circ.......I did my own experiment with a brand new loonie a couple years ago. Unrapped one and set in on my bedroom wood dresser...Took a look at it after just 2 or 3 days, then again after 7 or 8 days...Yu would be surprized that a lot of yellowing or oxidation, or normal circ use occured at just day 3 ....In other words 3 days in circ and old already....

persistnt has it. The color and luster of the two coins are different just due to the ages of them.

I found out the answer to my own question accidentally tonight , I was checking UNC sets and found that the loon coin is 2011 with bronze plated nickel , weight 7 g with no security features . It was part of the 2011/2012 circulation coin and test token set . Thanks to those who offered an answer .... now we know .

It has been my experience that all 2011 Canadian coins are extra nice. The pennies are super shiny, the loonies have that lustre you are seeing and the toonies seem to have a specimen appearence to them. I think it was just the way they were made.
