1959-1992 were wide "AM" business strikes and proof. ("M" centered between the A & M) 1993 all were Close "AM". (M on AMERICA to the left.) The 1994-2008 business strikes should be close "AM". (M on AMERICA to the left.) 1994-2008 proof cents should be Wide AM. ("M" centered between the A & M) There are a few 1998-2000 Business strikes with the Wide AM. (Collectables) There are a few 1998 & 1999 proof cents with the Close AM. (Collectables)

I am sure I am missing something here, the FG looks correct But it looks WAM I am pretty sure the FG is the CAM FG but why the space in AM?

Hi Rupester - looks CAM to me as well. I will say, though, that some CAMs have a tiny gap between the A and M but others seem to touch. My bleary eyes have a double take from time-to-time when I see the little gap so I set it aside and look for the other indicators when I pick it back up. Good luck on finding a WAM or CAM of the right vintage.

An over-polished die can create a "gap" between the A and the M which is why it is important to look at the location of the "FG" as you did and also the position of the "A" in STATES (centered when it's a WAM and closer to the second "T" if it's a CAM. I hope this helps.

Don't bother looking for WAMs on Denver coins post-1995. All Denver dies were formerly produced in Philly and shipped to Denver but they opened their own die shop in 1995 so they would not have had access to a proof die design to create a Wide AM reverse business strike from 1996 onward.

So what is with the AM? The devices seem smaller? I see the M isn't turned like it chould and the FG is placed where w CAM FG should be placed I do not understand the perhaps thinner devices on the A and M?

Die wear can enlarge of the devices some. Over polishing can reduce the size some. But there are only two styles. It's either one or the other. Nothing in between. I always look at it: Is the "M" centered or off to the left? I don't worry about how far, just if it is centered or not.

Thanks Coop!! Great explanation!! Die wear and polishing! That makes sense!! I have about 400 more of my grandmothers "penny jar" to finish I am hoping she has some great stuff!! Thought this was neat. Going to do a 89 Lincoln Cent thread soon...found something about the bowtie I found interesting. Its #7 on my list of to do's I've been working on something pretty big I will reveal hopefully by the end of the week. Cross your fingers for me!
