Looks to have been cleaned. I'm at high AU Details. I'm not good at grading these so thw coin could very well be MS.

Thanks, but no, its not cleaned...at least according to ANACS. Actually most of these were lightly cleaned, but tpgs tend to give that a pass unless its harsh....so I think it may have been "lightly" cleaned but deemed market acceptable for the type. I have seen oh so many cleaned Seated dollars in problem free slabs.

Thanks! Even though I stated that this coin has not been deemed "cleaned" by ANACS, it is still a problem coin. Anyone wanna guess why?

It looks like it was removed from a jewelry mount. Still a sweet looking Seated.

I'll say ANACS put this one at AU-55.
Could someone educate me. What are the marks around the rim of the obverse from?
Thanks, Joe2007

Aside from the cut marks on the rim it does look like it may have been filed. Details appear to be AU-53/55ish.

Yep, ANACS called it AU details, filed rims. net EF-40. I realize that filed rims is considered a travesty among the numismatic community, but for an album coin, it has got to be one of the least intrusive forms of damage. It is barely noticeable in my album, much better imho than cleaning, corrosion or scratches.....and still under half the price of a problem free coin. I think the cuts were from someone measuring the file somehow, as they are equally spaced.

The coin retains a respectable appearance and I undertand why you purchased it. I have a similar 1845 Seated dollar in my collection, with filed rims. In my case, I think the rim was filed to smooth down a rim bump. It does no bother me much anymore, other than I was so inexperienced when I bought it, that I probably paid much more than it is worth. I also have a number of damaged coins in my collection - and yes, even some with holes, and I bought them anyway as they are so scarce that I may have to wait 10 years to find another.

You can see the rim filing in your photos. It's still a great coin and I would have no problems buying it if priced right.
